A Career-High 26 Points from Jada Logan Leads Upstate in Conference-Opening Victory Over UNC Asheville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – As the calendar flipped to 2022, USC Upstate women's basketball rang in the New Year in the most appropriate fashion, collecting win number nine of the season in the team's Big South Conference opener while securing a special milestone for head coach Becky Burke.

Behind a 66-53 victory Saturday afternoon over UNC Asheville, Upstate collected Burke her 100th career victory with a win that tied the program's best scoring margin (+13) against a conference foe during Burke's tenure as head coach (2020-pres.).

Leading a quartet of double-figure scorers, junior guard Jada Logan poured in a career-high 26 points behind an 11-of-17 shooting performance, including 2-of-5 from three. Her 11 made field goals marked a career-high while her two three-point makes tied a career-best as she also added eight boards, four assists, and two steals.

Joining Logan in double-figures, senior forward Molly Coleman and redshirt sophomore guard Chellia Watson added 11 points each while freshman guard Rachael Rose contributed 10, running the Spartans streak of games with multiple double-figure scorers to 16.

How It Happened
First Quarter
- Coming off a nearly two-week layoff, Upstate opened the game hungry, racing out to a 14-3 advantage, including separate scoring runs of five and seven points, the second into the media timeout. Jada Logan led the Spartans with eight points, shooting 3-of-3 from the field while converting an and-one opportunity.
- Following a Bulldog jumper out of the media timeout, the Spartans put together a second 7-0 scoring run in the quarter to force an Asheville timeout. Logan once again paced the run, scoring the first five points.
- Adding to a 9-2 scoring run out of the first quarter media timeout, Upstate commenced the second quarter on a 6-2 run to outscore Asheville 15-4 over a near seven-minute span of the first half. Molly Coleman, Logan, and Chellia Watson each tallied a basket in the second quarter with Logan scoring seven of the 15 points in the stretch.
- Facing a 20 point deficit, Asheville fashioned its longest scoring run of the first half with a 5-0 run, spurred by four points from Nadiria Evans.
- After the 5-0 Bulldog run, Upstate closed the half with an 8-2 scoring advantage, including the final six points of the quarter in the half's final minute.
- With Asheville opening the second half with the first basket, Logan and Rachael Rose answered back to push Upstate's lead to 24 points, its largest of the game as the duo traded baskets and assists in a 5-0 run.
- Facing their largest deficit of the game the Bulldogs held Upstate scoreless for six-and-a-half minutes, using an 11-0 scoring run to bring the Spartan lead to 13. Asheville ended the half on a 13-2 scoring advantage.
- Asheville opened the fourth quarter with the first basket, pushing its scoring advantage to 15-2 over a nearly 10-minute span of the second half.
- Rose and Logan provided another answer for Asheville's long scoring run, scoring seven straight points to reextend the Spartan lead. Rose scored the first five points of the stretch, including a big three-pointer off an assist from Logan before Logan added a runner to complete the run.
- With Upstate's lead extended to 17, Asheville strung together a 6-0 run to trim the advantage before Coleman snapped the run with a tough and-one conversion. The Bulldogs tacked on five additional points following Coleman's and-one, cutting Upstate's lead to single digits during an 11-3 scoring run.
- With its lead trimmed to single digits, the Spartans closed the game on a 6-2 run to claim the 13-point victory.

- Holding Asheville to 53 points Saturday afternoon, each of Upstate's nine victories this season has seen the Spartans' opponent held to 53 or fewer points.
- Seeing four double-figure scorers against Asheville, Upstate extended its streak of games with multiple double-figure scorers to 16 consecutive games, including each of the 12 games this season. The four double-figure scorers tied a season-high for the Spartans while marking the most for the team against a Division I opponent.
