RADFORD, VA. – USC Upstate delivered Radford its first conference loss of the season in the form of a 2-0 shutout on Tuesday night in Virginia. Dara Russo and Ashley Finn helped Upstate get the lead while Cora Brendle and the Spartan defense kept the Highlanders scoreless.
Upstate was challenged early as Radford claimed the first few shots of the game but that didn't stop the Spartans from attacking up the field. Nya Baccelli had the first shot for Upstate but unfortunately was off target. Playing endline-to-endline, the Spartans and Highlanders exchanged offensive opportunities, but it was freshman Dara Russo who found the net in the 36th minute of play with the help of Margret Edda Bjarnadottir. The Spartans held the 1-0 led through to halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Radford was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Captain Ashley Finn made the most of the first penalty kick of the year for the Spartans, earning her first goal of the season and putting the Spartans ahead by two goals with 43 minutes of play remaining. In those 43 minutes, Cora Brendle made four saves on nine shots faced while the Upstate back line remained disciplined and connected.
Following the win head coach Sharif Saber said, "Tonight was another steppingstone for our program and the growth of these young women. They continue to grow both on and off the field. Big shout out to Cora who was a monster in goal for us once again".
