SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After being on the road for back-to-back games, USC Upstate women's basketball returned home to the G.B. Hodge Center where it fell 58-48 to the Western Carolina Catamounts in the second home game of the season.
AC Markham got the Spartans on the board as she went 2-2 for free throws one minute into the game. Upstate got the jump on the Catamounts, taking a four-point lead late in the first quarter before Western Carolina sank five points to finish the quarter.
The second quarter kicked off with the Spartans narrowing the Catamounts lead to two points, until WCU was able to go on a seven-point run to make the game 22-13 in favor of the visiting team. Points from Zora Fray-Chinn and Jeni Levine helped reduce WCU's lead to three points with just under three minutes before half. Going into half time, the Spartans trailed by just four points, with Fray-Chinn leading Upstate with 10 points in her 12 minutes of play.
Coming out of the break, Western Carolina went on a six-point run until Markham put two on the board from outside the paint. Upstate trailed Western Carolina through third quarter as the Catamounts' lead fluctuated. Rebekah Gordon led the Spartans through the third quarter with three points while Fray-Chinn earned her first career block. The Spartans went into the final ten minutes down 46-32.
Upstate had their best quarter of the game in the last ten minutes, outscoring WCU 16-10 and cutting the lead to 10 points on three separate occasions. Gordon found her rhythm in the final 10, as she posted eight points, one assist, and one block while Isabella Geraci posted four points. Despite the fourth quarter push, the Spartans fell 58-48 to become 1-3 overall on the season.

WCU responded with a three from Shayane Poirot-Allard to take the lead from the Spartans

Nyla Walker reclaimed the lead for Upstate with a jump shot just before WCU sank a floater to make the game 5-4 in favor of WCU.

Upstate went on a four-point run courtesy of Isabella Geraci and Jeni Levine to regain the lead.

WCU went on a run of their own, finishing the first quarter with the Spartans trailing 12-11 after putting five in.
Second Quarter

The Spartans continued to trail into the second quarter as the Catamounts hit a three-point right out of the gate.

Nyla Walker contributed to cutting down WCU's lead with a jump shot outside the paint to make the game 15-13.

Western Carolina added another seven points to the board before Fray-Chinn made a driving layup off a turnover in the paint.

Jeni Levine added two points after she went 2-2 from the line. Fray-Chinn tallied two more points off a second chance layup in the paint to make the game 22-19.

Before the break, the Spartans collected five more points as did the Catamounts to make the game 29-24 at the half.
Third Quarter

Coming out of the half, WCU went on a seven-point run to make the game 36-24 and force the Spartans to trail by 12 points.

Markham killed the streak with a jump shot for two and earn her first field goal of the night.

Western Carolina added another four to the board before Rebekah Gordon and Isabella Geraci both went 1-2 at the line to make it 40-28.

Gordon redeemed herself as she went 2-2 just before the end of the third quarter, making the score 46-32 before the final ten minutes.
Fourth Quarter

Isabella Geraci also redeemed herself as she went 2-2 at the line to start the half and cut WCU's lead down to 12.

Western Carolina went 2-2 for free throws to further their lead, but Rebekah Gordon knocked it back down to 12 with a layup.

The Spartans had their biggest battle as WCU had a 15-point lead with less than three minutes left.

Geraci and Gordon once again stepped up to the challenge, going 2-2 on free throws with minutes left in the game to make the score 54-44.

Gordon claimed the final four points of the game for USC Upstate with two layups to help her reach double figures on the night.
Notable

Zora Fray-Chinn notched several accomplishments tonight including a career-high 12 points and career-high seven rebounds, along with her first ever career block.

Rebekah Gordon also set a new career-high in points scored in a single game (13).

Isabella Geraci led the team in rebounds against WCU with eight.

Upstate set a season high for free throws made and free throws attempted (16-19).

Upstate also set a new high for steals with four in tonight's match.
