CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – USC Upstate women's basketball fell 89-47 to No. 7 ranked UNC in Chapel Hill on Friday night after back-to-back home wins earlier in the week. Trinity Johnson led the Spartans on offense with 13 points while Rebekah Gordon, Isabella Geraci, and AC Markham scored seven points each.
Upstate quickly found itself on defense as UNC started the game with a seven-point run. Head coach Jason Williams called a time out to regroup which proved to be a pivotal move for Upstate as the Spartan quickly went on to put the game within just one basket with 6:43 left in the quarter. The Tar Heels were able to go on a five-point run to stretch their lead to double-digits before Jeni Levine was able to make a layup to bring the game back within eight points. Upstate finished the first quarter trailing 25-12 as AC Markham led the Spartans with five points in the first ten minutes.
The second quarter went scoreless for almost the first two and half minutes until Isabella Geraci made two free throws to help chip away at the Tar Heels' lead. UNC went on an 11-point run to push the game to 36-14. Trinity Johnson was able to land a three-point jumper on the fast break to give the Spartans some much needed momentum. Nyla Walker followed with two free throws to help bring the game back within 17 points. Geraci would collect the final points of the half for Upstate with a three-point jumper from deep. The Spartans would go into the break trailing 45-22. Geraci tallied five points in the second quarter, going 100% for free throws and three pointers.
Coming out of the break, the Tar Heels posted six points until Nyla Walker was able to get Upstate's offense going again. Walker's jumper was followed by a layup from Johnson; Johnson scored once again with a jumper to make the game 55-28 in favor of the home team. Jeni Levine finished the third quarter with two made free throws, as Upstate would go into the final 10 minutes trailing 66-37.
The Spartans kept their feet on the gas until the end as UNC scored a layup to open the fourth quarter and Johnson responded with a three-pointer. Johnson continued to be a threat to UNC defense as she scored a layup and the and one to remind the Tar Heels that the Spartans would fight until the clock hit zero. UNC went on a 12-point run until Rebekah Gordon was able to land a jumper. Courtney Turner claimed the final points for the Spartans with a jumper with less than a minute remaining. At the buzzer Upstate fell 89-47 to No. 7 UNC. Johnson posted six points in the fourth quarter, going 2-3 for field goals as 1-1 for free throws.
