Ingles Education Day presented by BASF slated for Monday, December 12 is sold out but kids across the country can still take part!
For the first time in over three years, USC Upstate is excited to welcome the return of an annual tradition, Ingles Education Day presented by BASF. The 2022 installment is slated for Monday, December 12 with an 11:00 am tip-off between the Spartans and the Morehead State Eagles.
In mid-October, it took less than a week for Spartanburg County school administrators to jump on the chance to attend and fill the available seats for Monday's contest. With seats held for the family members of both teams and over 680 school children expected, the game is a sell out.
"We love the Hodge Center because of its size, it creates a great home court advantage. When the Hodge is full, it is really loud. For Education Day, we take that to another level - decible level - to be exact. Based on the demand, we could have easily hosted well over 1,000 children, so our team wanted to find an innovative way to expand the reach to include children not able to attend in person," said Lenny Mathis, senior associate athletic director of external operations.
Enter the Teaching Fellows of the USC Upstate College of Education, Human Performance and Health (CoEHPH). The Fellows worked to create a series of one-page lessons found within the Education Day game program. This program, linked here, will be distributed to all children attending the game, but now is available for anyone across the country to download, tune in on ESPN+ live or via replay, complete the workbook and write their own recap of the event!Â
The workbook is tailored to students in 3rd and 4th grades. Prior to the game, the USC Upstate Enrollment Services office will provide a walking tour of campus to the nearly 700 4th - 8th grade students slated to attend. Education Day at USC Upstate is a free event presented by Ingles Markets and BASF.
Special thanks to Rebecca Kunz in Upstate Enrollment Services, and the workbook design team of Erin Caldwell at Southeastern Printing in Spartanburg, the Teaching Fellows in the USC Upstate CoEHPH, led by dean Dr. Ugena Whitlock, and associate directors of athletic communications Kendra Toman and Ryan Frye.
