SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Upstate and the Sports Medicine Institute, part of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, announce an expansion of their partnership to provide USC Upstate student-athletes with the highest level of care.
USC Upstate and the Sports Medicine Institute have long held a partnership whereby most members of the USC Upstate athletic training staff were employees of the university, while a few members were employees of the hospital system. Now, under the newly expanded partnership, all athletic trainers have become employees of Spartanburg Regional as it assumes complete operation of the athletic training facility while continuing to work in partnership with university leadership.
"I'm so thankful to Spartanburg Regional for partnering with us on this new project. With them taking over the staffing of all of our athletic trainers, our student-athletes will benefit immensely from the continuity of care that will be achieved between our athletic trainers, our team doctors, and our hospital provider. This partnership will benefit USC Upstate by helping us achieve better outcomes for our injured student-athletes while strengthening our relationship with one of our region's most caring corporate citizens," said USC Upstate vice chancellor and director of athletics, Daniel Feig.
By virtue of being fully under the Spartanburg Regional scope of care, Spartan athletes have access to state-of-the-art equipment, as well as medical reporting and documentation software that is shared with Spartanburg Regional. The athletic training staff will have direct access to the Sports Medicine Institute doctors, as well as additional professional development opportunities.
"This partnership helps deliver the best possible care and highlights the unique relationship between our physician providers and USC Upstate," said Mat Lyden, sports medicine manager.
USC Upstate worked with Spartanburg Regional to onboard staff, including new head athletic trainer Eric English, who takes over the lead role for the department. English is a familiar face to the USC Upstate community having served in the department for the last 16 years.
English assumes the leadership role from Sandy Sandago, who retired from full-time work following the 2021-22 athletic year and has transitioned into a part-time role. Sandago, a highly regarded fixture in the Upstate athletic department for nearly two decades, remains active at Upstate this season working primarily with the men's basketball and golf programs.
The Sports Medicine Institute staff at USC Upstate also includes Katlyn Ledbetter, Abbey Earich, and Joslynn Trail. The department plans to add additional staff in the coming months as well.
In addition to the exciting upgrades afforded to student-athletes by this new arrangement, the Sports Medicine Institute will receive naming rights to the field at County-University Soccer Stadium, now referred to as Spartanburg Regional Field at County-University Soccer Stadium, as well as presenting sponsorship of Sparty's Ball and Auction. The Sports Medicine Institute will have a presence in every home athletic event in various ways over the life of the partnership.
"I want to say a special thanks to Mat Lyden and the entire leadership team at Spartanburg Regional," said Feig. "They have always been a strong partner of USC Upstate, and this new partnership takes our relationship to a whole new level with our student-athletes being the primary benefactors!"
