SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Hitting the field for the first time during the 2022 season, USC Upstate baseball found itself in a tight season opener as it dropped a 9-6 series-opening game with Ohio at Cleveland S. Harley Park Friday night.
Jumping out to an early lead, Upstate saw Ohio fight back in the middle innings as the game found itself tied heading into the final inning. The Bobcats took advantage of its patience at the plate during the ninth, drawing three walks before scratching three runs with a pair of singles.
Making his USC Upstate debut, senior leftfielder

- B1: Stepping to the plate for the first time in his career, freshman designated hitter Noah Sullivan delivered the first runs of the game with his first career hit, a triple into the right-center gap, bringing home Noah Myers and Devin Buckner.
- T3: Behind back-to-back doubles, Ohio found itself on the scoreboard for the first time as designated hitter Alex Finney roped a double inside the third-base bag to score Isaiah Petterson.
- B3: The Spartans tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 4-1 as Cameron MacIntosh lifted a ball to right that was misplayed by the right fielder. On the miscue, Myers and Buckner for their second runs of the game.
- T4: The Bobcats tallied three runs in the fourth to tie the game at three using a pair of double and a sac fly to pull even for the first time in the game.
- B6: Racing home on a wild pitch by Ohio pitcher Brett Manis, Cole Caruso gave Upstate the lead with his first run scored in a Spartan uniform.
- T7: Ohio tacked on two runs as the Bobcats picked up an RBI single from AJ Rausch before scoring another on a wild pitch.
- B7: Picking up his first hit of the season, a triple into the right-center gap, Cameron MacIntosh came home as Caruso reached on an error by the shortstop.
- T9: Taking the lead for the final time, Ohio added three runs in the top of the ninth after taking advantage of three walks and back-to-back singles.
Notable
- Making their Upstate debuts, Noah Myers and Noah Sullivan racked up the lone multi-hit and multi-RBI games, respectively, by Spartans this season.
- As a pitching staff, Upstate combined for nine strikeouts on the afternoon as Jacob Curry and Kevin Davis each racked up four punchouts apiece.
