Heading to Extra Innings for the First Time in 2022, Baseball Falls Via Walk-Off at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – Rekindling a series between two ASUN foes for the first time in the midweek, USC Upstate baseball embarked on extra innings for the first time this season, taking Kennesaw State to the 11th inning before being walked-off in a 5-4 loss Tuesday.

For the fourth straight game, Upstate struck first, plating a run in the first on a double to center from Noah Sullivan in the top of the first. Kennesaw State gained the lead for the first time in the fifth behind a two-run homer before the Spartans battled back to tie the game on an RBI groundout in the sixth.

The Owls retook the lead with a solo shot in the eighth. In the ninth, the Spartans plated two in the top half of the inning before Kennesaw State answered in the bottom half to send the game to extra innings with the Owls walking it off in the 11th.

Notable
  • Going into extra innings for the first time this season, Tuesday's game marks the first extra-inning contest since April 3, 2021, against Radford and the longest since going 12 innings against Ohio on March 1, 2019.
  • Earning his first career start on the mound, Chase Matheny tossed a career-long 4.0 innings on a career-high 40 pitches as he allowed just three baserunners, allowing a walk while scattering two hits. Not allowing a run in his outing, he dropped his season earned run average by nearly 70 points to 1.84.
  • Picking up two hits against the Owls, Troy Hamilton collected his fourth multi-hit game of the year and his second in as many games. Coming on as a pinch-hitter in the eighth, Jeff Taylor secured his first multi-hit effort of the year, including his second double of the year in extras.
