Spartan Softball Sweeps Day One of the Stetson Invitational

Deland, Fla. – Upstate softball kicked off the first day of the Stetson Invitational with a 2-1 win over Bethune-Cookman and a 7-2 win over Stetson advancing its record to 14-1.  

USC Upstate took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held the lead until the third inning. Bethune-Cookman was able to tie the game in the top of the third, but the Spartans triumphed over the Wildcats with a run from Sarah Price. Alyssa Kelly threw 78 pitches through 7.0 innings surrendering three hits and one run while recording three strikeouts.  

The Spartans momentum carried into their second game of the day, as they took on tournament host Stetson immediately following their first game. Upstate took a commanding lead scoring seven runs in the first four innings; Stetson was able to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings but the Spartans emerged victorious. Hannah Houge threw 115 pitches through 7.0 innings surrendering five hits and two runs while recording eight strikeouts.

How It Happened         

  • B1: With the bases load, Peyton Darnell walked to first, advancing Summer Johnson to second, Tiffany Dominigue to third, and Madison Lanoux home. 

  • T3: A double down the left line from Joslynn Davis sent Shania Owens home to tie the game at 1-1 

  • B4: Sarah Price collected a run off a Wildcat fielding error giving Upstate a one run lead

How It Happened        

  • T1:Sarah Price reached home after Mady Lanoux reached second off a throwing error by the pitcher.  

  • T1: Lanoux came home courtesy of Casey Goguts' home run to left center giving Upstate a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  

  • T2: Alanna Deal collected her first run of the day after Mady Lanoux singled to the pitcher. 

  • T4: Celeste Delorenzo recorded her first run of the game after Price hit a single through the left side. 

  • T4: A sacrificed fly from Lanoux advanced Price to third and sent Deal home for her second run of the day. 

  • T4: Price joined Deal at home with a single to right field from Goguts.  

  • B4: Lizzie Shubert put Stetson on the board with a homerun to left field.  

  • B5: Haley Fox scored the final run of the game off a wild pitch.  

   

Notable         

  • Hannah Houge passed 50 innings pitched after today's game against Stetson. 

  • Casey Goguts leads the Spartans with 41 total bases and a .774 slugging percentage 

  • Today's match against Bethune-Cookman tied the season high for walks for the Spartans (5) originally set against N.C. Central (2/11/2022) 

  • Alannal Deal set a few season highs with one hit, one RBI, and two runs against Stetson.  

  • Upstate set a new season high for assists (13) against Stetson.
