Spartan Softball Caps Successful Game One Against Hampton with Senior Night Celebration

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Upstate ensured a win on senior night with an early seven-run lead over Hampton. The Spartans would play all seven innings, emerging victorious 8-1 before taking time to thank the five seniors who will graduate this semester.  
    
The first inning brought three runs in for Upstate as the first three batters of the game would all come home before the inning was over. Denver Lauer and Summer Johnson recorded their first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning, while Sarah Price and Tiffany Domingue sported their second. Hampton would find a way to avoid being shut out with a home run in the top of the sixth inning. Domingue would get one final run in for Upstate, finishing the game 8-1 in favor of the Spartans. Hannah Houge pitched 7.0 innings and had 10 strikeouts, recording her 25th win of the season.

How It Happened    

  • B1: Sarah Price scored the first run of the game as Tiffany Domingue hit a single to left center. 

  • B1: Celeste Delorenzo made a break for home plate as Peyton Darnell grounded out to the Hampton shortstop. 

  • B1: Domingue secured Upstate's third run of the game off a sacrifice fly from Casey Goguts.  

  • B2: Denver Lauer beat out the Hampton infield, reaching home as Sarah Price reached first on a fielder's choice.  

  • B2: After stealing second, Price came home with a Domingue double. 

  • B2: Domingue followed Price home in a similar fashion as Summer Johnson hit a double down the left line.  

  • B2: Johnson came home courtesy of a single down the right-field line from Peyton Darnell  

  • T6: Emily Kepple hit a home run over the left-field fence to put Hampton on the board.  

  • B6: With her second hit of the day, Peyton Darnell reached first while Domingue scored the final run of the game.  
        

Following the win, Upstate softball took the time to thank and commemorate its five graduating seniors: Mady Lanoux, Sarah Price, Alexa Sanchez, Marisa Soterakis, and Hannah Houge. Lanoux is graduating with a Bachelor's in criminal justice along with a minor in psychology. She plans to return to Upstate for a fifth year and double-major in interdisciplinary studies. Price is graduating with a Bachelor's in secondary education with a concentration in math. She plans to take advantage of her remaining eligibility and get her master's in business analytics. Sanchez is graduating with a Bachelor's in criminal justice along with a minor in psychology. Upon graduating, Alexa plans to apply to the police academy and work toward her goal of having a career in the FBI. Soterakis is graduating with a Bachelor's in Accounting.  Upon graduating, Marisa plans to attend Clemson's MPAcc program for a master's in accountancy and pursue her CPA. Hannah Houge is graduating with a Bachelor's in exercise science. She plans to teach and continue to coach softball upon graduating.

Notable                  

  • Hannah Houge threw double-digit strikeouts for the ninth time this season.  

  • Tiffany Domingue hit a season-high four hits as well as hit a season-high for doubles (2). 

  • Domingue leads Upstate with 17 multi-hit games after today.  

  • Sarah Price leads Upstate in stolen bases and is now tied for third in Upstate history with 32 stolen bases.  

  • Peyton Darnell is currently riding a five-game hitting streak and a five-game reached base streak.
