Baseball Claims First Win Over South Carolina in the D1 Era With a Historic 9-6 Victory Tuesday Night

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Seeing South Carolina back on the schedule for the first time since 2019, USC Upstate baseball used its opportunity to renew the series to break a 13-game skid against the Gamecocks with a 9-6 midweek victory Tuesday night.

Against his former team, senior rightfielder Noah Myers, for the second time in three games, tied his career-high with two hits, going 4-for-5 with a career-best two doubles to pace the Spartan offense. Extending the team's home run streak, redshirt sophomore first baseman Grant Sherrod hit his first homer in an Upstate uniform with a drive to left in the sixth, pushing the streak to 12 games.

On the mound, six Upstate hurlers combined to stymie the Gamecock bats, limiting South Carolina to six runs and seven hits on the night while combining to strike out eight. Tossing 2.1 innings of relief, freshman left-hander Al Holguin recorded his fourth win of the year while in his third relief outing of the season, senior right-hander Austin Morgan earned his third save with a scoreless ninth, punching out two.

Scoring Summary
  • T2: Stepping to the plate with two runners on thanks to a pair of free bases, Devin Buckner delivered the game's first run with a single into centerfield. Noah Myers immediately followed with a single through the right side to drive home another before the inning's third wild pitch allowed Buckner to score. Shooting a flare over the head of a drawn-in second baseman, Noah Sullivan pushed the Upstate lead to 4-0 as Myers raced in to score.
  • B2: Getting back one of the runs surrendered in the top half of the inning, South Carolina plated a run behind a sacrifice fly into center off the bat of Jalen Vasquez.
  • B4: Cutting the Spartans' lead to two, Gamecock Josiah Sightler pulled a ball into the home bullpen as his solo homer made things 4-2.
  • T5: Following a leadoff double into left-center from Myers, Noah Rabon picked up an RBI as he shot a single back through the middle as Myers scored from second.
  • T6: Opening the inning with an HBP to Adam Grob, Upstate extended its homer streak to 12 games as Grant Sherrod hit the first homer of his career with a two-run, no-doubter to left.
  • B6: With the bases loaded in the sixth, South Carolina tacked on another run with a sac fly, this time off the bat of Talmadge LeCroy before two additional runs scored off a muffed pop-up in the infield.
  • T8: With two runners in scoring position following a successful sac bunt from Jack Hennessy, Buckner tallied his second RBI as a run came in on a slow roller to the second baseman. Myers added another RBI as he ripped a double down the rightfield line, increasing the Upstate advantage to 9-5.
  • B8: The Gamecocks pushed across their final tally as Brandt Belk rang a double off the base of the wall in the rightfield corner.

Notable
  • For the first time in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.), Upstate defeated South Carolina, breaking a string of 13 consecutive losses in the series. Baseball becomes the second Spartan program to defeat the Gamecocks for the first time in the D1 era this season, joining Men's Soccer.
  • With its victory Tuesday night, Upstate has combined to win 68 games over the past two seasons, 37 in 2021 and 31 in 2022. The total sets the program record for wins in consecutive seasons in the program's NCAA era (1990-pres.), passing the combined 67 victories by the 2006 and 2007 squads.
  • Tuesday's victory at South Carolina marked the 13th victory over a Power-Five opponent during head coach Mike McGuire's head coaching career, winning at least one Power-Five game over each of the past six seasons. Overall, Tuesday's victory is the sixth Power-Five victory for McGuire at USC Upstate (2020-pres.) with two such victories in each of his three seasons.
  • With his two-run homer in the sixth inning, Grant Sherrod extended the Spartans' home run streak to 12 games, using his first career homer. During the streak, Upstate has hit 21 homers after hitting 14 over the season's first 37 games.
  • Using a second-inning single, Noah Sullivan extended his reached base streak to 33 games. The streak marks the longest active reached base streak in the Big South.
