SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After Mother Nature played with the start time of the opening game of USC Upstate baseball's weekend series with UNC Asheville, she reared her head again Sunday with a lengthy weather delay and an early conclusion as rain and lightning set in. With the game called in the top of the 10
th inning, the Spartans and Bulldogs concluded the series with a 5-5 tie Sunday evening.
Playing a bit of small ball with back-to-back sacrifice bunts, Upstate got on the scoreboard first using a safety squeeze in the fourth. Asheville provided an answer with two outs in the fifth, breaking up senior right-hander
Jacob Curry's no-hitter with a double before following with an RBI triple to the right-center gap to tie the game.
Seeing the game tied into the eighth, the Bulldogs put up three runs in the inning behind three hits and a walk to take their first lead of the game. Asheville added another run in the ninth before Upstate put forth a comeback effort in its final at-bat. Trailing 5-1 into the home half of the ninth, the Spartans saw the first three hitters of the inning reach base before
Noah Myers drove in the first run with a sac fly with
Noah Rabon and
Troy Hamilton following with a two-run triple and RBI single, respectively, to tie the game.
