HIGH POINT, N.C. – Showing its resilience, USC Upstate baseball fought until the bitter end as one of the most successful seasons in program history came to a close Friday at the 2022 Ingles Big South Baseball Championship as the Spartans dropped a pair of battles against Charleston Southern and Campbell.
Opening the day with a bout in the winner's bracket, Upstate was unable to overcome the persistent nature of the Charleston Southern offenses as the Buccaneers scored in eight of the nine innings Friday in an 11-4 victory. The Spartans plated three of their four runs thanks to six free bases in the second inning against the Buccaneers before senior rightfielder
Noah Myers connected on his team-leading ninth homer of the year to end the Spartans' hitless drought in the eighth.
In the nightcap, Upstate fought tooth-and-nail to stave off elimination against Campbell as the two teams battled back-and-forth late into the night. The Spartans struck first with four runs in the first before the Camels answered with five of their own. The teams matched runs in the third and the fifth before Campbell scored two unanswered runs in the eighth to escape with an 11-8 victory.
