CLINTON, S.C. – USC Upstate softball made history on Friday night as they were the first team in Upstate history to become the regular season champions while competing in the Big South Conference. Upstate swept Presbyterian with a 6-3 win in game one and an 8-3 win in game two solidifying its spot at the top of the Conference and the first seed into the Big South Conference Tournament next week.
Presbyterian wasted little time in game one as they posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning, both off home runs. Upstate held PC at three runs in the second inning and tied the game with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Spartan defense would not surrender another run for the remainder of the game, while they posted three more runs in the remaining four innings. Hannah Houge took the mound for game one where she pitched 7.0 innings and had 10 strikeouts.
Game two got off to a slower start with neither the Spartans nor the Blue Hose scoring in the first two innings. Upstate finally broke the tie, scoring three runs in the top of the third, as well as one in the fourth and fifth to have a cushy five run lead by the top of the fifth. Presbyterian was able to fight back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth just before both teams both be told to exit the field due to lightening in the surrounding area. After almost a two-hour delay, the game would resume with one out already on the board for the Spartans. Sarah Price wasted little time getting Upstate back into the groove scoring one in the top of the sixth. The game would finish with two final Upstate runs in the top of the seventh. Alyssa Kelly started on the mound for Upstate where she pitched 5.0 innings and had three strikeouts. Kelly was relieved in the top of the sixth by Houge who pitched the remaining 2.0 innings and added five strikeouts to her day. Houge was credited with the save while Kelly walked away with the win.
USC Upstate joined the Big South Conference in 2018. The Spartans made it to the Big South Conference Tournament final last season and came up just short. Before joining the Big South, Upstate competed in the ASUN from 2007-2018. While in the ASUN, Upstate softball were the ASUN Conference Tournament Champions in 2008, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017, while winning the regular season in 2014. During their 2013-2017 run, the Spartans made it to the NCAA Tournament.
