USC Upstate Ties Davidson 1-1 in Women's Soccer Home Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate kicked off its 2022 season with a 1-1 draw with the Davidson Wildcats. Junior midfielder, Ellie Arnold, not only got the honor of the first Spartan goal of the season but also earned her first career goal with the free kick she placed in the upper 90 just a few minutes into the second half. 
  
The Spartans held the Wildcats scoreless for 59 minutes before Davidson was able to get on the board with a goal from Riley Patton. Both teams would duke it out, end line to end line, but neither was able to secure a win before the whistle signified full time.

How It Happened 

  • 13' – Hailey Braemer (DC) was able to get the first shot of the game, but Junior goalkeeper Cora Brendle (UPST) was able to save the shot to deny Davidson an early lead.  

  • In the first half, Davidson led Upstate in shots 8-1 but the Spartans flipped the script and led 8-4 in shots in the second half. 

  •  50'- Ellie Arnold (UPST) capitalized on a Davidson foul. Arnold was able to send the free kick, just outside the 18-yard-box, into the upper right side of the net giving Upstate the 1-0 lead.  

  • 59'- Riley Patton (DC) found the back right corner of the Upstate goal off a cross from the left side of the field from Hailey Braemer.  

  • Upstate led the game in corner kicks (5-3) and in saves (5-3) 

  • Davidson led the game in shots by a small margin (10-9) and shots on goal (6-4) 
     

Notable 

  • Ellie Arnold scored her first career goal against Davidson after recording one assist in the 2020-21 season.  

  • This was the second straight time Upstate has tied Davidson at home, improving their overall record against Davidson to 0-1-2 

  • Five Spartans tonight saw the field for the full 90 minutes of play, three of which are true freshmen: Emily Rangel, Dara Russo, Alaina McKnight, Sydney Thomas, and Cora Brandle

Upstate will continue its home stint with Appalachian State, Sun. August 21 followed by Hampton, Tues. August 23 and ETSU, Sun. August 28. Following the home series, Upstate will hit the road to play The Citadel in Charleston on Friday, Sept. 2.
