SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Third match's the charm
The USC Upstate Spartans are taking on the South Carolina Gamecocks on the pitch Tuesday night. Upstate certainly hopes to recreate the outcome from last years' meeting.
Series History
The Spartans have found some recent success against the Gamecocks, taking the win in the match last season thanks to a
Hayden Anderson header after a
Mario Arrocha corner kick at the 51' minute.
South Carolina does still lead the series 4-1-0 in the five meetings since 2017 and the Gamecocks hold a 7 – 2 edge in goals in the series.
Last Match
Upstate and South Carolina both played against the top ranked Clemson Tigers in their last match. Upstate fell to the defending national champions 2 – 0 after a physical 90 minutes.
South Carolina had a slightly closer meeting with the Tigers, but the result was the same: a 1-0 loss to the top ranked team in the nation.
Both matches saw more than 20 fouls called, with Upstate's meeting with Clemson receiving 23 and the Gamecock's meeting seeing 25 fouls.
Players to Watch
Senior goalkeeper
Luca Bulfon is coming off of a strong performance against the Clemson Tigers where he turned away 6 of their shots.
Xavi Wences had Upstate's one SOG against Clemson and could be in line for more offensive opportunities. The Spartans will need to find a way to produce more opportunities against the Gamecocks and newcomers like
Pablo Diaz,
Liam Knight and
Joseph Christy could provide some of the juice Upstate needs.
UP Next for the Spartans
Upstate will return from their 3-game road slate to the comfortable confines of Spartanburg for their first home match of the season. They'll be taking on ETSU Saturday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m.
