BUIES CREEK, N.C. – USC Upstate women's basketball received its first loss in conference play as the Spartans fell 51-49 in Buies Creek, N.C. on Wednesday night. Geraci had her fourth consecutive game scoring in double-figures (14) while Jeni Levine tied her season-high for points (10).
Campbell was able to get to the basket first but Upstate was quick to not only get on the board but to take the lead. The Spartans and the Fighting Camels traded buckets as well as the lead, but it was Upstate who came out on top at the end of the first quarter. Five Spartans posted points in the first quarter, but it was Jeni Levine with three points that led the team while Isabella Geraci led with five rebounds.
The Camels started off the second quarter finding the basket first but once again the Spartans were ready to respond. Through the second quarter, there were 14 lead changes, and the score was tied five times. Despite some accuracy from the free throw line, Upstate went into the break trailing 26-24. AC Markham led the Spartans as she went 2-2 for field goals. Vera Soderblom led the team with two rebounds as well. Upstate went 83.3% for free throws in the second quarter (5-6).
Coming out of the break, Upstate tied the game but continued to battle for the lead. With just over three minutes left in the quarter the Fighting Camels were able to establish a seven-point lead. Geraci, Markham, and J. Levine all posted points in the fourth quarter to help try to chip away at Campbell's lead. Markham, Johnson, Fray-Chinn, and Soderblom all recorded two rebounds each. Once again, Upstate showed accuracy, as it went 75.0% from the free throw line in the third quarter (3-4).
Both teams continued to find the basket as the game moved through the fourth and final quarter. Upstate went on a seven-point run that gave it a two-point lead with 5:40 left on the clock. The Fighting Camels then went on a seven-point run in response to force the Spartans to trail 48-43 with just over three minutes left in the game. In the final minutes, Upstate made one final push, putting away six points to take the lead, 49-48, with just under a minute and a half remaining. Campbell was able to score one final basket and one final made free throw to give Upstate its first conference loss by two points. In the fourth quarter, Geraci posted seven points while Johnson had six and J. Levine had 5. Johnson also recorded four rebounds while Geraci had two steals. Upstate finished the game going 80.0% for free throws (16-20) and forcing Campbell to have its closest scoring game of the season thus far.

How It Happened:
First Quarter:

Campbell was able to put points on the board first with a driving layup.

Upstate responded with a three-pointer followed by a driving layup to take the lead.

Another driving layup from the Camels put the game within one just before a free throw opportunity. A good free throw tied the game up at five apiece.

A jumper from Nyla Walker returned the lead to the Spartans and a layup from Geraci gave Upstate a four-point lead.

With a layup and a three-pointer the Camels took a one-point lead with under a minute and a half left in the first quarter.

Zora Fray-Chinn returned the lead to Upstate to finish the quarter with the Spartans leading 11-10.
Second Quarter:

The Camels hit a three to kick off the second quarter, but Markham was quick to respond with a jumper.

Johnson followed up Markham's jumper with one of her own making the game 15-13 and forcing Campbell to take a timeout.

Coming out of the time out Campbell sunk a three-pointer to take the lead and make the game 16-15.

Two made free throws from Geraci kept the game within one but in favor of the Spartans.

With the game still within one, the Fighting Camels scored a layup with just over five left in the half.

Soderblom's first points of the game and a made free-throw from Roldan pushed Upstate's lead to two points.

Campbell was able to put away the final points of the half with a pair of made free throws and layup, making Upstate trail 26-24 going into halftime.
Third Quarter:

Markham started the second half with a layup to tie the game at 26 apiece.

Campbell responded with a three-pointer to try to get some distance from the Spartans.

One made free throw from both Upstate and Campbell put the game at 30-27 with the Spartans trailing.

The Camels had a six-point lead which the Spartans were able to bring within four after Geraci made two free throws.

With under two left in the quarter Jeni Levine hit a jumper which would cap the scoring for the third quarter as the Spartans trailed 36-31 going into the final 10.
Fourth Quarter:

Geraci continued to try to chip away at the Fighting Camels' lead with a three to start the quarter.

Campbell responded with a three-pointer to keep a five-point lead.

Despite being down, Upstate went on a seven-point run to reclaim the lead with just over five left.

The Fighting Camels responded with a seven-point run of their own to make the game 48-43 in favor of the home team.

Two made free throws from Jeni Levine put the game within three points with under two minutes remaining.

An additional two free throws from Johnson and a layup from Geraci gave Upstate a one point lead.

In the final minute Campbell was able to make a layup as well the and-one to retake the lead and ultimately win the game.
Notable

Jeni Levine tied her season-high for points (10) which she originally set against Montreat (12/14/22) as well as set a new season-high for minutes played (35) which was originally set against High Point (1/7/23).

J. Levine also set a season-high for 3-point field goals made (2) and tied her season-high for steals for the third time (2).

Geraci scored in double-figures for the eighth game this season (Campbell, High Point, Radford, Charleston Southern, Morehead State, Vanderbilt, UNC Greensboro, Southern Wesleyan).

Geraci set a new season-high for free throws made and attempted (7-8) as well as steals (4)and field goal attempts (11).

Tonight's loss was the smallest margin Upstate has loss by this season (51-49).
