SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's basketball fell at home for the first time since starting conference play at the end of December, as the Spartans came up short against the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night. Despite a valiant third quarter push for a comeback win, Upstate finished the game trailing 81-56.
Upstate got a solid start against Gardner-Webb despite GWU getting on the board first. The two teams exchanged points for nearly the first six minutes as Upstate was able to lead by four points five times. The Spartans found themselves trailing to the top conference opponent as the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to go on a run just before the media timeout. Gardner-Webb's scoring run forced the hosting Spartans to trail 28-14 after the first quarter. Rebekah Gordon led Upstate through the first quarter with seven points while AC Markham was behind her with four. Both Gordon and Markham recorded two rebounds as well. In the first quarter, Upstate went 50.0% for three-pointers and 50.0% for field goals.
The Spartans continued to trail through the second quarter as they tried to shift the momentum of the game away from the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs. Trinity Johnson led Upstate through the second quarter, scoring six points, making two rebounds and being credited with one assist. Vera Soderblom led the Spartans in rebounds with five in the second quarter while AC Markham and Isabella Geraci had three apiece.
Coming out of the break, Upstate was able to get some momentum as they outscored Gardner-Webb 15-11 in the second quarter. Johnson continued to lead Upstate as she posted five points in the second quarter with Geraci behind her with four. Geraci led the Spartans in rebounds with four while Markham posted another three.
With only 10 minutes remaining, Upstate continued in its efforts to battle back and posted 19 points in the fourth quarter compared to Gardner-Webb's 22. Despite the efforts, Upstate fell 81-56 to Gardner-Webb. Jeni Levine and Trinity Johnson posted four points each in the final quarter while Soderblom recorded an additional three rebounds and two points.
