SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The 2023 Cross Country season came to a close for the USC Upstate Spartans with the conclusion of the 2023 Southeast regionals earlier today.
The defending national champions looked the part today as the NC State Wolfpack posted blisteringly fast times, led by top individual finisher Katelyn Tuohy's 19:29 minute 6K, while en route to a 52-point finish, claiming the top team spot in the region. Not too far behind the Wolfpack were the Paladins of Furman, who claimed the other automatic bid to next week's NCAA Championship in Charlottesville, Va.
In the men's 10K, Furman's Dylan Schubert would earn a first-place finish, out-pacing his closest competition by just two seconds. The North Carolina Tar Heels would claim the first of two automatic berths while the Eastern Kentucky Colonels would take the other.
As for the Spartans, Jordan Thornton led the effort for the women's team, completing her first collegiate 6K in 24:01 at a pace of 6:26. She was followed on the team by Adalie Harrison and Maureen Ortiz who both finished averaging a sub-7:00 minute mile. As a team, the women would finish 34th of 41 schools registered in the regional.
Nigel Dos Santos paced the men's team, finishing his 10K in 32:45 at a 5:16 clip. Not too far behind was Sam Shimanskiy and Carter Sexton, who both maintained a 5:20 pace and finished under 33:15. The men finished 31st of 40 schools competing.
