Spartan's Drop First Road Game of the Season With First Ever Loss to Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – USC Upstate women's basketball program started its 2023-24 season with an 86-51 loss on the road to Davidson on Tuesday night.

The hosting Wildcats were quick to post number on the board after winning the tip off, but Upstate was quick to match Davidson's points. Despite not getting the first points, the Spartans were able to take the lead twice in the first quarter. The two teams were locked at 12 points each with three minutes left in the first quarter until Davidson went on a nine point run to make the game 23-12 in favor of the host team. Gordon, Markham, Reeves, and West all contributed to Upstate's 12 points in the first.

Davidson started the second quarter with three points, extending the Wildcats' lead to 26 before a jumper by Maggie Brown was able to get the Spartans' offense going again. Markham, Gordon, and Barnes were able to make it to the basket to help chip away at Davidson's lead. Despite battling through the remainder of the first half, Upstate went into the break trailing by 20 points.

Reeves came out of the halftime break eager to start racking up points as her three-pointer off the fastbreak brought Davidson's lead to 17. The Wildcats went on an eight-point run before Jeni Levine made a jumper in the paint on the fast break. Upstate continued to pressure the Wildcats and was able to score a game-high 16 points in the third quarter, making 45% of its field goal attempts (5-11) and 62.5% of its free throws (5-8)

Although the third quarter saw most of Upstate's scoring, the Spartans found most of their precision in the final quarter, scoring 50% of their field goals, 100% of their three-pointers, and 66.67% of their free throws. The Spartans concluded the game with seven points in the final four minutes of play with points coming from Mae Afoa, J. Levine, and C. Levine.
