Noah Sullivan's Multi-Homer Game Backs 5.2 Strong Innings From Mathieu Curtis As Baseball Sweeps Midweek Series at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Going for a series sweep and looking to build upon its three-homer, seven-extra-base hit game, USC Upstate baseball completed its midweek sweep of North Florida as the Spartans hit four more home runs in a 9-4 decision Wednesday afternoon.
 
Headlining the trio of Spartans to hit a homer Wednesday, sophomore designated hitter Noah Sullivan secured his second career multi-homer game as he tallied a solo shot in the fourth and the ninth. In the fourth, he went back-to-back with sophomore first baseman Johnny Sweeney while sophomore catcher Jace Rinehart added a two-run home run in the sixth.
 
Making his Upstate debut on the mound, freshman right-hander Mathieu Curtis put forth another strong effort for a Spartan starting pitcher making his first career start, tossing 5.2 innings while scattering four hits and surrendering just one earned run. Earning the win, he is the fourth Upstate starting pitcher to earn a win in his first career start, following redshirt junior righty Reese Dutton, junior left-hander Henry Proger, and sophomore southpaw Al Holguin.

Scoring Summary
  • T3: Scoring the first run of the game for the second straight day, Upstate got on the board as a fielding error by the third baseman allowed Adam Grob to come home and break the deadlock.
  • T4: Tacking onto its lead, Johnny Sweeney and Noah Sullivan hit back-to-back solo homers to left-center to build a 3-0 advantage. With the home run, Sweeney has homered in both games of the midweek series.
  • T6: Opening the inning with a double and single, Cole Caruso and Grant Sherrod put a pair of runners into scoring position for the Spartans as Grob stepped to the plate and drove home a run with a sac fly to center. Following Grob, Jace Rinehart hit the Spartans' third home run of the day, another shot that left the yard in left-center.
  • B6: Getting on the scoreboard for the first time in the game, the Osprey used an RBI single from Gabriel Esquivel to plate the first run of the frame. Getting back both runs surrendered on the Rinehart homer, Peyton Sybrandt drove home a second run with a sac fly.
  • T7: Working his way into scoring position with a steal before being advanced to third, Noah Rabon raced home to score as Caruso singled into center. The Spartans added a second run as Caruso scored on a single through the left side off the bat of Grob.
  • B7: Earning back the two runs it surrendered in the top half of the inning, North Florida plated two runs on a two-run homer from Eric Fouraker.
  • T9: Leading off the ninth, Sullivan secured his second career multi-homer game with a solo shot to left.
 
Notable
  • With a pair of solo homers for the Spartans against North Florida, Noah Sullivan collected his second career multi-homer game, joining his game against Gardner-Webb on April 20, 2022. Adding three more hits today, he's gone 6-for-10 in the two-game set with the Osprey, driving in five runs.
  • Homering for the second straight game, Johnny Sweeney is the first Spartan since Noah Myers on May 7-8, 2022, versus Longwood to homer in consecutive games. Going back-to-back with Sullivan in the third, the pair are the first to go back-to-back with one another since Noah Rabon and Troy Hamilton on April 22, 2022, against North Carolina A&T.
  • Earning the win after going 5.2 innings in his Upstate debut, Mathieu Curtis continued a streak for the Spartans seeing starting pitchers earn the win in their first career start. He becomes the fourth Spartan starter to do so this season, joining Reese Dutton, Al Holguin, and Henry Proger.
