Overview:
USC Upstate is ready to host the annual Wings Etc. Classic, following the Spartan Classic. During last year's Wings Etc. Classic, Upstate reached its 11-game win streak to start the season just before it fell 2-1 in eight innings to Pittsburg. The Spartans went 3-1 overall in the tournament, walking away with 20 runs and wins over Tennessee Tech (3-2) and Cleveland State (9-1; 7-0). Most recently, Upstate took a break from hosting tournaments to play Queens in the first mid-week game of the season and emerged victorious with an 8-1 finish.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate: The Spartans continued to extend their winning streak as they beat Queens 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Tiffany Domingue and Sarah Price walked away from the game with multiple runs (2), while Price also had multiple hits (2). Along with Price, Denver Lauer also had multiple hits; both Price and Lauer had doubles and finished the day with two RBI. Alyssa Kelly earned her fourth win of the season as she pitched 7.0 innings and had six strikeouts.
Drexel: The Dragons started their season at the Battle at the Beach Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina. At the Battle at the Beach, Drexel fell to ECU (4-1; 4-3), Coastal Carolina (5-2; 11-2), and Colgate (4-2). After the season opener, Grace Abbonizio and Izzy Alamillo leads the Dragons with two runs each; Ameryn Humble leads in RBI (4) and total bases (5). Jessica Schable leads Drexel's pitchers with 20.2 innings pitched and eight strikeouts.
Iona: The Gaels will start their 2023 season at the Wings Etc. Classic. Iona returns some of its top players from the 2022 season including starting Pitcher Kara Zazzaro who went 12-11, threw 170.1 innings and had 237 strikeouts. Jessica Chilcott also returns after having 23 runs, 44 hits, 10 home runs, 31 RBI, and 80 total bases last season. Jamie Sheeran also returns with the Gaels after the 2022 season brought her 27 runs, 45 hits, 12 home runs, 26 RBI, and 89 total bases.
Queens: The Royals sit 5-3 on the season after falling 8-1 to Upstate on Wednesday. In the mid-week game, left fielder Gerlea Patton scored the lone run for the Royals. Courtney Autumn received her first loss of the season after coming into the game with a 3-0 record. Autumn pitched 6.0 innings and struck out three Spartans.

UP NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS
Following the completion of the Wings Etc. Classic, Upstate will head out to Florida for its first road games of the season at the USF Tournament March 3rd- 5th. At the tournament, Upstate will take on Northern Illinois, Kansas, Army, South Florida, and Rhode Island.
