SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball wrapped up the Wings Etc. Classic with back-to-back wins over Iona (6-5) and Queens (7-1) on Sunday at Cyrill Stadium. Upstate advances its record to 13-0 on the season and goes undefeated with a 6-0 in the Wings Etc. Classic.
In game one, Sarah Price got the Spartans started as she scored off a sacrificed fly from Summer Johnson in the bottom of the first. The second inning brought runs in from Celeste Delorenzo who came home off a double from Alanna Deal, and one run from Deal who came home after Tiffany Domingue sent a single up the middle. After three unanswered runs, Iona got on the board in the top of the third. For the Spartans in the bottom of the third, Cassie Norris was caught stealing but provided enough of a distraction that Denver Lauer snuck home to make the game 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Sarah Price stole second and while the Gaels tried to catch her stealing, Delorenzo made her way home. Iona scored its second run in the top of the fifth with a home run over left field. Lauer helped Upstate score its final run with a single that advanced Summer Johnson home. The Gaels nearly had a late comeback as they hit scored a three RBI home run over left center to make the score 6-5. Upstate showed exceptional defense to finish the game and record its 12th consecutive win.
Game two against Queens started slow, with a scoreless first inning. Upstate opened the flood gates in the second inning as it scored four runs. Pinch runner Taliyah Thomas got the Spartans' scoring started as she came home off a single from Lauer. Lauer followed shortly after as Deal sent a single to left field. The second inning scoring was capped with Deal and Caroline Jacquay adding two runs to the board after Sarah Price sent a single to center field. The third inning was also scoreless for both teams, but Upstate would tally another three runs in the fourth. Pinch runner Liza Simmerson scored first for the Spartans in the bottom of the fourth as Summer Johnson hit a double to center field. Johnson was brought home by Domingue who singled to left field and Domingue stole home after there was a throwing error on the Royals. Queens was able to score one run in the top of the seventh to finish the game.
Maddie Drerup started her fourth game of the season against Iona and finished the game with her fourth win of the season. Olivia Hall saw time in today's game against Iona as she relieved Drerup in the top of the seventh. Hall was later relieved by Alyssa Kelly who finished the game. Kelly made her eighth start this season in the circle for the Spartans and walked away with her eighth consecutive win after beating the Royals. Kelly pitched 7.0 innings and had four strikeouts against the Royals to finish the weekend with a 0.62 ERA on the season.
