BUIES CREEK, N.C. – USC Upstate softball dropped its first couple Big South games of the season as the Spartans fell to the Fighting Camels of Campbell University in the double-header on Saturday afternoon.
Game one started with both teams going scoreless through the first inning. The Camels were able to strike first with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Upstate forced Campbell to go scoreless through the third inning as well, as Alyssa Kelly caught one swinging to finish the inning. Peyton Darnell got some momentum for the Spartans in the top of the fourth with a single to third base. Taliyah Thomas pinch ran for Darnell and showed some speed to steal second but was left there in the middle of the fourth. Tiffany Domingue stepped up and hit her eighth double of the season to left field to help bring Celeste Delorenzo home for Upstate's lone run in game one.
Similarly to game one, game two started with both teams going scoreless through the first two innings. Contrary to the first game, Upstate was able to get on the board first with one run in the top of the third. Denver Lauer hit a sacrificed fly out to center field which not only advanced Sarah Price to third but also sent Alanna Deal running home. The Spartans found themselves trailing by four runs at the completion of the third inning. Continuing to battle, Upstate once again rounded home via one run from Mady Lanoux off a triple to right field from Denver Lauer. Despite the given effort, the game finished in the bottom of the fifth and the Spartans finished the day trailing the series with Campbell.
Upstate is set to finish the series against the Fighting Camels of Campbell University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
