Upstate Splits Mid-Week Non-Conference Contest During Road Games Against the Paladins of Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – USC Upstate softball split its double-header with Furman on Wednesday evening, starting with an 8-2 win over the Paladins which was followed by a 4-3 loss to finish the day. Upstate's overall record shifts to 26-7 after the mid-week match.  

The visiting Spartans struck first in game one, with not only one run in the first inning, but three runs in the third and one run in the top of the fourth before the Paladins were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Upstate's offense continued to push on, tallying one run in each of the remaining three innings. Casey Goguts went 3-4 in game one, recording three runs, three hits, and three RBI as well as one double and one homerun. Celeste Delorenzo went 2-3 while also bringing in three runs. Denver Lauer and Mady Lanoux scored one run each as well to help the Spartans achieve an 8-2 win. Alyssa Kelly made her 18th start of the season and walked away with her 16th win of the season with two strikeouts. Olivia Hall relieved Kelly in the bottom of the seventh, making her fourth appearance of the season.  

Using the momentum from game one, Upstate scored first and scored early with two runs in the first inning. Furman responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning which tied the game at two runs each. Upstate regained the lead in the top of the fifth with one run from Lauer off a triple from Goguts. The Paladins were able to post two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 4-3 win. Goguts again showed precision as she went 3-4 in game two, recording one run, three hits, and one RBI. Lauer also had another solid performance in game two with one run, one hit and one stolen base. Maddie Drerup made her 14th start of the season, pitched 5.0 innings, and had two strikeouts before she was relieved by Kelly. Kelly pitched the remaining 1.0 and recorded two strikeouts.

How it Happened:  

T1: Casey Goguts hit a homerun over the left center wall to give Upstate its first run of the day.  

T3: Goguts stepped up with a 2-1 count and sent a double to right center which sent both Denver Lauer and Celeste Delorenzo home.   

T3: Summer Johnson singled to the second base to advance Peyton Darnell to third and Gouts home for her first run of the day.  . 

T4: With a 2-0 count, Denver Lauer hit a single through the right side helping Celeste Delorenzo to safely reach home.  

B4: Poole hit a sacrificed fly down the left line which gave Perry enough time to reach home. 

B4: With an 0-2 count, Woodall hit a single up the middle, which advanced Burroughs home and Laudick to third right before she was called out at home.  

T5: Sarah Price reached first on a fielder's choice after an attempted sacrificed bunt to get Goguts home. Goguts successfully reached home as the Paladins' short stop had a throwing error.  

T6: Tiffany Domingue sent a single up the middle which sent Delorenzo home for her third run of the game.   

T7: Despite being behind in the count (0-1), Lauer singled to the shortstop which advanced Delorenzo to second, Deal to third, and Lanoux home.  

Game Two             
Score: USC Upstate 3; Furman 4

How it Happened:  

T1: Peyton Darnell hit a sacrificed fly to right field which not only advanced Casey Goguts to third but also sent Tiffany Domingue home to give Upstate its first run of game two.   

T1: Summer Johnson hit a single to center field which brought home Casey Goguts to establish a two-run lead for Upstate.  

B2: Perry hit a homerun over the left field wall to get the Paladins on the board in game two.  

B2: A fielding error from Upstate's shortstop helped Suniga reach first and sent Burroughs home.  

T5: Goguts hit a triple to right center which advanced Lauer from third to home plate.  

B5: Perry hit a homerun over the left center wall, bringing Ludlam home as well, to achieve the win for Furman.  

                
Notable                

  • Her homerun in game one was Casey Goguts sixth homerun of the season.  

  • Denver Lauer is currently on a six-game hitting streak and a six-game reached base streak.  

  • Goguts has now had seven multi-hit games this season and four multi-RBI games. 

  • Lauer is first on the team for RBI (25) and first on the team for hits (37).
