Upstate Finishes Day Two of USF Tournament With Win Over Army and Loss to USF

TAMPA, Fla. – USC Upstate softball split day two of the USF Bulls Invitational Tournament after a five-inning 9-1 win over Army and a seventh inning 2-1 loss to South Florida. Denver Lauer finished the day with three runs, three hits, one RBI, one homerun, one double, and one stolen base.

The Spartans started game one of the day with three runs in the first inning courtesy of Summer Johnson, Peyton Darnell, and Casey Goguts. A single from Goguts, a double from Tiffany Domingue and a triple from Cassie Norris all helped the Spartans to earn the first three runs of the game. Army was able to get on the board with a walk in the bottom of the second. Both teams went scoreless through the third inning, but the Spartans would tally another three runs in the top of the fourth. Errors from Army's third baseman and catcher would help Upstate reestablish a six-run lead in the middle of the fourth. Another Army error in the top of the fifth brought Goguts home just before Delorenzo slammed a triple to center field to send Lauer running home as well.

After a short game one, Upstate was set to take on South Florida. Lauer stepped up as the leadoff batter for the Spartans a ripped one just over the left field wall to give Upstate an early one run lead. The Spartans then shutout the Bulls for six innings as Alyssa Kelly threw three strikeouts and only one gave one walk. With one out, South Florida put in a pinch hitter that would lead to two runs for the Bulls to walk away with the win.

Maddie Drerup started her eighth game of the season and threw her third complete game to earn her sixth win of the season. Drerup had one strikeout and held the Black Knights to only one run. Kelly had her 10th game of the season and threw her eighth complete game to reach 50 strikeouts on the season.
