Upstate Softball Falls to No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Wednesday Night

ATHENS, GA. - USC Upstate softball paused Big South play on Wednesday night to take on No. 9 ranked Georgia. The Spartans fell 6-0 despite holding the Bulldogs scoreless through three innings.  

Alyssa Kelly made her 26th game start of the season in the circle for the Spartans to take on the Bulldogs. Upstate found itself trailing early as ranked UGA was able to tally three runs in the bottom of the first. The Spartans found themselves trailing by five runs after the second as the Bulldogs added two to the board in the bottom of the inning. Upstate gained some momentum in the third inning as the Spartans got their first hit in the form of a bunt from Sarah Price as well as a pitching change. Maddie Drerup started in the circle in the bottom of the third and helped Upstate keep the Bulldogs off the board for the next three innings. Upstate's second run came in the top of the fifth as Celeste Delorenzo hit a single to left center. The final run of the game would come in the bottom of the sixth in the form of a solo homerun for Georgia. Upstate would depart Georgia with a 31-15 record overall while maintaining its 7-8 Big South record.

Notable                

  • Georgia is one of four teams to be able to keep the Spartans off the board this season.  

  • Of the nine-game series, this is only the second time Upstate was shutout.  

  • Sarah Price and Celeste Delorenzo are the only two Spartans to currently have a hitting streak.  

  • Peyton Darnell is currently riding an eight-game reached base streak while Summer Johnson and Celeste Delorenzo each have a four-game reached base streak.  

Up Next for the Spartans 

Upstate will resume conference play as it is set to go against cross-town opponent Gardner-Webb this Friday and Saturday.
