Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Trip Down the Road to Wofford Brings Upstate Women's Soccer First Loss of the Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite fighting for 90 minutes, USC Upstate women's soccer received its first loss of the season as it fell 2-1 to Wofford on Thursday night. Paige Armstrong tallied the lone goal for Upstate in the first half which kept the game alive.

The Spartans and the Terriers would started the game with 13 minutes of possessive soccer. It was the Terriers who would claim the first shot of the game despite exceptional ball movement of the field from the Spartans. In the 24th minute of play, Upstate conceded the first goal but continued to look for opportunities to capitalize on. Such a capitalization came in the 34th minute when Margret Edda Bjarnadottir served a corner kick from the right side of the field. Bjarnadottir's corner kick was deflected just outside the 18-yard box where a composed Armstrong hit a one-touch volley into the lower left corner of Wofford's goal to tie the game. Upstate and Wofford carried the 1-1 tie into the halftime break.

Refusing to back down, Upstate fired the first few shots of the second half, hoping to take advantage of the late first half momentum they built up. In the 56th minute of play, a Terrier forward was able to get enough space to find the back of the Spartans' net to make the score 2-1. Upstate continued to fight through the remaining 34 minutes and held the Terriers without a shot for 25 minutes while rattling off two more of their own. At the end of full time, the Spartans left Snyder Field with their first loss of the season to shift to a 1-1-1 record.
