Spartans End Initial Non-Conference Slate 2-3-1 After Falling to Liberty

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate Spartans end their initial non-conference slate with a 2-3-1 record after falling to Liberty by a score of 4-1. 

The Spartans were down 2-0 early in the first half, but Jeremy Montero found the back of the net for his first goal of the season which allowed the Spartans to make it a 2-1 game at the half.  

Liberty came out and built upon their lead early in the second half, going up 3-1 in the 49th minute before getting their fourth at the 84th.  

Montero was the only Spartan to take more than two shots on the night, but Felipe Marty, Braiden Hall, Jimmy James, Adrian Panaite, and Anthony Cox all had opportunities as well.

18' - But Jeremy Montero buries a shot of his own to bring it within 1 again 

49' - The Flames add another goal to their lead 

55' - Felipe Marty records his first shot of the year and the Spartans sole shot of the second half 

84' - Liberty gets another goal to make it a 4-1 match 

Notable 

  • The Spartans started their fifth different lineup this season 

  • Elijah Jackson recorded his fifth straight 90-minute match 

  • Jeremy Montero is the fifth goal scorer of the season. His goal in the 18th minute was his first since his game-tying score against Winthrop last year 

  • Felipe Marty saw his first action of the season, picking up a shot on 56 minutes in the match
