SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate women's soccer program collected its third victory of the season after a late 2-1 road win over Jackson State on Monday afternoon. Dara Russo kicked off the game with a goal in the 18th minute of play to give the Spartans the lead. Nya Baccelli sealed the win with the game winning goal in the 84th minute of play.
The Spartans came out strong from the jump with shots from Russo, Baccelli, and Savannah Noll in the first six minutes of play. Jackson State was able to get its first shot off in the ninth minute of play. Dara Russo got Upstate on the board as she fired a shot about five yards from the top left corner of the 18-yard box. Russo's shot found the upper left corner of the net to give the Spartans an early lead. Refusing to let the visiting Spartans have the lead, the Tigers were able to battle back quick and score in the 25th minute of play. Only one shot was taken the remainder of the first half, and it belonged to Ellie Arnold but was unfortunately off target. For the fifth time this season, Upstate went into the halftime break tied.
Coming out of the break, the Spartans remained on the attack with Emily Sanders firing at the Jackson State goal early. Upstate and Jackson State continued to trade off shots with the Spartans leading 3-2 in shots but the score remained 1-1. Nya Baccelli put away the game winning goal from Upstate in the 84th minute of play with Adrianna Pepe and Paige Armstrong being credited for their assistance. Baccelli's late goal and six minutes of strong defensive efforts gave Upstate its third win of the season and its second win on the road. The Spartans advance their overall record to a 3-1-4 and will begin conference play at home against UNC Asheville on Saturday night.
