Volleyball Sees Winning Streak Snap in Hard-Fought Bout at Winthrop to Close Opening Weekend of Big South Play

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Closing out the opening weekend of Big South Conference play, USC Upstate volleyball fought to extend its winning streak for the second straight day as it finished its two-match road swing. The Spartans, however, could not run said streak to seven matches, falling in straight sets against Winthrop Saturday afternoon.

Records: USC Upstate (6-9; 1-1 Big South); Winthrop (4-7; 1-0 Big South)

How It Happened
Showing its grit as it battled throughout the afternoon, Upstate saw its floor defense register 20-plus digs per set for the third time in 2024, putting forth its third-highest single-match digs per set total of the season. The Spartans dug up 60 total balls in the match, registering 23 and 24 digs, respectively, in the first and second sets en route to its 20.0 digs per set on the afternoon.

Leading to one half of her double-double of the season, freshman setter Kamyla Vega David paced Upstate with a team-high 12 digs—the lone Spartan to reach double-figures in the category. Senior libero Julia Gladhill and freshman defensive specialist Hannah Campbell finished just shy of double-digit digs, recording nine and eight balls scooped up, respectively.

Vega David passed out a team-best 15 assists to complete her ninth double-double of the year. Splitting time at the setter spot, senior setter Kayla Spangler handed out 11 assists and added two kills on her lone attack attempts.

Atop the box score for the Spartans offensively, junior middle blocker Ady O'Grady led the team with 10 kills behind a .280 hitting efficiency. Junior middle blocker Alona Clinansmith and junior right-side hitter Savannah Page contributed six kills apiece to slot behind O'Grady in the statistical category.
