Noah Sullivan and Julian Parson Pitch Combined Shutout; Sullivan Backs Pitching Effort with Three RBI in 10-0 Weekend Opening Win Against Quinnipiac

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Opening the third iteration of the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic, USC Upstate baseball earned its second consecutive victory as it combined a persistent offense with stellar pitching as it earned a 10-0 shutout victory over Quinnipiac to kick off the season's second weekend at Cleveland S. Harley Park. Additionally, the win marked the second straight shutout for the Spartans in the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic, closing last season's event with a 9-0 shutout of Northwestern.

Earning the combined shutout, right-handers, redshirt sophomore Noah Sullivan and junior Julian Parson, teamed to strike out 10 Bobcat hitters, each punching out a career-high five hitters. Making his second start of the season, Sullivan scattered three hits and five baserunners over 6.0 innings while Parson—in his first appearance of the year—tossed the final 3.0 innings to earn his second career save. The duo also factored into their third (Sullivan) and second (Parson) shutouts during their career.

Putting double-digit runs on the board for the second straight game, four Spartan starters recorded multi-hit efforts, paced by a career-high three hits from redshirt sophomore second baseman Jake Armsey as he finished a home run shy of the cycle. Backing himself, Sullivan drove home a team-best three runs, plating all three with productive outs, two sacrifice flies and one RBI groundout.

How It Happened
  • B1: Putting Upstate on the board in the first inning for the second straight outing, Grant Sherrod followed a double steal from Daniel Gernon and Troy Hamilton with an RBI single, plating Gernon to spur an opening-frame three-spot. Noah Sullivan drove in the second tally with a sac fly to center before Koby Kropf plated the third with a single to left.
  • B2: Following a leadoff single from Vance Sheahan, Jake Armsey tripled home Upstate's fourth run.
  • B3: Earning his second RBI of the afternoon, Sullivan used a second sac fly to push across another run in the third.
  • B4: The Spartans scored two additional runs in the fourth with the first coming across on a throwing error by the Quinnipiac third baseman before Hamilton knocked in a run with a single to center.
  • B5: Picking up his third RBI of the night, Sullivan plated Upstate's first run of the new frame before Armsey tallied his second RBI with a single through the left side.
  • B6: Scoring for the eighth consecutive inning dating back to the midweek, Jace Rinehart drove in the game's 10th and final tally with a single up the middle.

Notable
  • Following up Wednesday's 16 runs against Western Carolina, Upstate's 10 runs against Quinnipiac gives the Spartans back-to-back games scoring double-digit runs for the first time since April 30 and May 3, 2023, against Presbyterian and Queens.
  • Friday's shutout victory stands as the Spartans' first this season and the first since blanking Gardner-Webb 4-0 on May 6, 2023. The shutout marks Upstate's sixth shutout since the beginning of the 2022 season.
  • Securing a hit against Quinnipiac, Vance Sheahan pushed his hitting streak to five games to begin his collegiate career. His five-game hitting streak to begin his career is the longest by a Spartan since teammate Noah Sullivan fashioned a five-game hitting streak to begin his freshman season in 2022.
  • Troy Hamilton and Jace Rinehart upped their reached base streaks to 12 games each versus the Catamounts, the longest active streaks by a Spartan, while Grant Sherrod joined the group with a double-figure reached base streak, pushing his to 10 games. Rinehart pushed his hitting streak to 10 games, also the longest active streak by a Spartan.
  • Appearing as a defensive replacement, Pierce Bouwman became the ninth Spartan to make his USC Upstate debut during the 2024 season.
