SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing its first doubleheader of the season and first since early April 2023 as the opener of the team's series with Penn was affected by persistent rain, USC Upstate baseball split Saturday's twin-bill at Cleveland S. Harley Park, taking game one from the Quakers by a mark of 14-4 before dropping game two by a score of 11-5.
For the second straight season, the Spartans split their first doubleheader of the season after not playing one since sweeping a twin bill in the prior April, however, in the 2024 season, Upstate took the opening game, in contrast to winning the finale last season. The offense carried the freight in the game one victory, building upon a nine-run first inning in the team's fifth double-digit run game of the season. Redshirt senior shortstop
Troy Hamilton led the Spartans in the front end of the doubleheader, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run.
In game two, Upstate jumped out to an early advantage for the second consecutive contest before the Quakers battled back to take the lead in the middle innings. The Spartans answered the deficit, battling back to take the lead in the sixth with homers from Hamilton and redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Noah Sullivan. However, Penn fought back with seven runs in the late innings to event the series and split the twin bill.
