Baseball Attempts Comeback With Late Flurry Before Falling Tuesday at Fluor Field Versus No. 21 South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Wrapping up a streak of nine games in the Upstate and hosting at Fluor Field—the home of the Greenville Drive—for the third straight season, USC Upstate baseball attempted a comeback with a late flurry of runs but fell short Tuesday in a 14-8 setback against No. 21 South Carolina.

Answering a Gamecock run with a pair of their own in the first inning, the Spartans began a back-and-forth start to the game as the lead traded twice through the first two frames. The game, however, tilted its momentum toward South Carolina as the Gamecocks scored nine runs in the fourth inning. Upstate answered the deficit with six runs of its own in the sixth inning as it sought a comeback, but the Gamecocks added two tallies in the eighth to end the day's scoring.

Three Spartans finished the evening with a multi-hit game as redshirt sophomore third baseman Jake Armsey, redshirt junior rightfielder Koby Kropf, and redshirt senior first baseman Grant Sherrod each picked up two hits apiece. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Noah Sullivan claimed the team's lone multi-RBI game, driving home two.

How It Happened
  • T1: Beginning the night's scoring, Cole Messina launched a solo homer over the Green Monster in left, putting South Carolina out front.
  • B1: Upstate answered the Gamecocks run with a pair of its own as Koby Kropf and Jace Rinehart strung together back-to-back hits. Kropf drove home the equalizing run as he ripped a single through the right side before Rinehart doubled down the rightfield line to put the Spartans ahead.
  • T2: Rebutting the two runs scored in the previous half inning, the Gamecocks tacked on two more as Parker Noland dropped a single into the left-center gap.
  • T4: Taking advantage of six free bases, two wild pitches, and three Upstate errors, South Carolina hung nine runs on the board during the frame. The biggest hit of the inning for the Gamecocks came as Ethan Petry launched a two-run homer off the batter's eye.
  • B6: Getting six of its surrendered runs back, Upstate used five hits in the inning, two free bases, and a two-base error to fashion its big inning. Easton Cullison and Daniel Gernon drove in a run apiece with RBI singles before Troy Hamilton pushed one across as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Grant Sherrod and Noah Sullivan followed the HBP with a pair of singles with Sullivan's chasing home the final two tallies of the inning.
  • T8: South Carolina plated the final two runs of the night on a two-run home run to center from Blake Jackson.

Notable
  • Striking out 10 Gamecocks Tuesday, Upstate's pitching staff recorded its 10th game of the season with 10 or more strikeouts. The game also pushed the pitching staff to over 200 strikeouts on the year.
  • Following Tuesday's midweek contest, Grant Sherrod and Jace Rinehart each extended their hitting streaks to 12 and 11 games, respectively, as the pair holds the lone double-digit hitting streaks for the Spartans.
  • Six Spartans finished Tuesday's game versus South Carolina with a reached base streak greater than 10 games, headlined by a team-long 18-game reached base streak from Koby Kropf.
