Mother Nature and Elon Stymie Baseball in 6-1 Midweek Setback Tuesday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Seeing first pitch moved up due to impending rain, USC Upstate baseball saw Mother Nature impact the team's midweek game against Elon as lightning and rain moved in at Cleveland S. Harley Park and halted the contest in the middle of the sixth inning, resulting in a 6-1 setback by the Spartans as the game was called.

Offensively, Upstate picked up five hits through the game's five complete innings as redshirt senior leftfielder Daniel Gernon recorded the team's lone multi-hit game, picking up two hits—a double and single—as he reached in each of his three plate appearances. Driving home the Spartans' lone run, redshirt senior first baseman Grant Sherrod recorded his 38th run batted in of the season.

On the mound, junior right-hander Trent Hodgdon tossed 2.0 shutout innings of relief for the Spartans, finishing the afternoon tying his season-high for strikeouts with three.

How It Happened
  • T1: Stepping to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs, Will Vergantino began the game's scoring with an RBI single into right-center.
  • T2: Upon loading the bases as three straight hitters reached base to begin the frame, Elong added two more tallies in the second. The first scored off a sac fly from Ryan Sprock before a single through the left side from Connor Offshack chased home the game's third run.
  • B3: Upstate put itself on the board in the third as three straight batters reached with two outs with a single from Grant Sherrod back through the box driving home the run.
  • T4: With five hits in the inning, the Phoenix plated three runs in the fourth to finish the game's scoring with Kenny Mallory Jr., Vergantino, and Justin Szestowicki driving home the runs.

Notable
  • Reaching base upon being hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter in his lone plate appearance, Noah Sullivan extended his reached base streak to 19 games, the longest active streak by a Spartan. Sullivan's streak stands as one of four reached base streaks greater than 15 games, joined by Troy Hamilton (17), Daniel Gernon (16), and Jace Rinehart (15).
