A Mid-Week Clash with the Paladins of Furman University Finish with a Split Result for the Spartans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball returned home to Cyrill Stadium following its time in Charleston against the Bucs and split the mid-week double-header against Furman with a 7-3 win in game one and a late 4-3 loss in game two.

Upstate began the day in dominating fashion as the Spartans finished game one 7-3 after getting four runs on the board and holding Furman scoreless through the first three innings. Denver Lauer kicked things off for the Spartans, scoring the first run of the game off Alanna Deal's single to center field in the first inning. Deal pushed Upstate's runs to two after she was sent running home off Carson Shaw's single up the middle. Lauer tallied her second run of the game in the second inning after stealing home when the Paladins' defense wasn't looking. Left fielder, Taliyah Thomas extended Upstate's lead to four in the bottom of the third after a passed ball from the Paladins. Furman was able to tally two runs in the top of the fourth to try to get out of the four-run hole Upstate created. The Spartans were quick to respond as Thomas dinged one to left center to score both Alanna Deal and Celeste Delorenzo to regain a four-run lead. Lauer pushed Upstate's lead to a game-high five runs with a single to right field to score Faith Wharton. Furman scored one final run in the top of the sixth but it was Upstate's stellar defending that shutdown the Paladin offense and secured the 7-3 win.

Game two began slower as both teams went scoreless through the first two innings. The Spartans once again got on the board first as Abigail Pippen came home from third off Deal's sacrificed fly to center field. Abigail Polk earned her second hit of the day in the fourth inning as her single to center field advanced Emily Stern to third and Taliyah Thomas home for run number two of the game. After a scoreless fifth inning for both the Spartans and the Paladins, Polk scored her first run of the day after coming home off a wild pitch. Despite holding Furman scoreless through six complete innings, the Paladins were able to stack four runs in the top of the seventh, forcing Upstate to fall by just one run.

Sierra Maness made her 16th game start of the season in game one against Furman and brought her total innings pitched to 98.0 after throwing her 11th complete game of the season. Maness finished the day with six strikeouts against 36 batters faced. Maddie Drerup made her 11th game start of the season in game two against the Paladins and brought her total innings pitched to 61.2 after throwing her sixth complete game of the season. Despite the loss, Drerup had an exceptional performance and threw a season-high eight strikeouts.
