Baseball Scratches a Pair Late Against No. 18 Coastal Carolina Before Falling in Midweek Finale

CONWAY, S.C. – Closing out the back half of a two-game midweek series, USC Upstate baseball found itself falling a few innings shy as it offered a late comeback attempt, looking to follow the blueprint from Tuesday's series opener, but ultimately fell 9-2 to No. 18 Coastal Carolina Wednesday at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Behind his third multi-hit game of the day, redshirt junior rightfielder Koby Kropf tied a career-high with three hits to pace the Spartans lineup as one of three players with a multi-hit effort. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Noah Sullivan and freshman shortstop Vance Sheahan each recorded two hits for their fourth and third, respectively, multi-hit games of the year.

Driving home redshirt senior centerfielder Daniel Gernon—who twice reached three times via a free base (two walks and an HBP)—Sullivan and redshirt senior first baseman Grant Sherrod each picked up an RBI on the afternoon. For Sullivan, his two hits and one RBI give him six hits and seven runs batted in during the two-game series.

How It Happened
  • B2: Heading to the plate for the second time, Coastal Carolina got itself on the board first behind a pair of solo home runs to open the inning.
  • B3: The Chanticleers added four tallies in the frame to expand their advantage. The first runs came from a bases-clearing double by Jake Books before he was driven home by Deah Mihos.
  • B5: Adding another run, Graham Brown slugged a leadoff solo shot for the Chanticleers in the fifth.
  • B6: For the third time on the afternoon, Coastal Carolina led off the home half of an inning with a solo shot, this time by Derek Bender.
  • B7: With runners on the corners, the Chanticleers drove home an additional tally on a fielder's choice to second.
  • T8: With runners on the corners for the Spartans, Noah Sullivan ripped a line drive single into left, sending across Daniel Gernon for the team's first tally.
  • T9: Drawing a two-out walk and stealing his way into scoring position, Gernon raced home to score for the second time as Grant Sherrod snuck a ball inside the first base bag.

Notable
  • Adding two hits and an RBI Wednesday, Noah Sullivan finished the two-game set with Coastal Carolina with six total hits and seven RBI. He opened the midweek series with four hits, two home runs, and six RBI Tuesday.
  • Held without an extra-base hit in game two against the Chanticleers, Wednesday's game marked the second time this season Upstate has not recorded a hit going for extra bases, the first since Feb. 17 versus Kentucky.
