JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - USC Upstate softball fell on day two of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge with a 5-0 finish against the hosting Dolphins.
Both the Spartans and the Dolphins went scoreless through the first four innings. Freshman pitcher Sierra Maness helped keep Jacksonville off the board with four strikeouts, all of which came from Dolphins' caught swinging. Jacksonville was able to score in the bottom of the fifth despite Maness earning two more strikeouts with batters swinging. The bottom of the sixth saw two more runs for the hosting Dolphin, resulting in a 5-0 loss for USC Upstate. Denver Lauer and Taliyah Thomas had one hit respectively. In addition to her one hit, Lauer also was successful in stealing a base as was Aime Johnson and Alanna Deal.
Maness made her 11th start of the season against Jacksonville and had six strikeouts in her 5.0 innings pitched. Lydia Drake made her third appearance of the season and faced three batters after relieving Maness in the bottom of the sixth. Drake was relieved by Alyssa Kelly who made her eighth appearance of the season, third appearance in three games, in the sixth. Kelly had one strikeout in her 1.0 innings pitched and faced only three batters.
