Baseball Earns Series Victory Behind 7-2 Sunday Decision at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Entering the day with an opportunity to take another series victory, USC Upstate baseball earned the series victory in its Big South Conference bye week behind a 7-2 rubber match victory over The Citadel Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.

Being spotted a three-run lead following the second inning, sophomore right-hander Mathieu Curtis allowed just one run over his next five complete innings to keep the Spartans in a position to add on. He'd finish the day scattering seven hits and two runs while striking out four to record the win. Earning his third save of the year, redshirt junior righty Jake Cubbler tossed the final 3.0 innings, holding the Bulldogs off the board with three scoreless frames.

Upstate added to its one-run lead with four additional runs in the eighth, taking advantage of three consecutive walks to open the inning before back-to-back triples from redshirt senior first baseman Grant Sherrod and junior leftfielder Jace Rinehart chased home the four tallies, creating the final margin.

Sherrod led the Spartans with his team-leading 13th multi-RBI game of the season, driving home three with his bases-clearing triple in the eighth. Freshman third baseman Vance Sheahan recorded his first career four-hit day, leading Upstate in the category, while Rinehart finished a home run shy of the cycle in his team-best 19th multi-hit game.

How It Happened
  • T2: Jumping out front first for the second time in three games during the series, Upstate plated three in the second frame. Troy Hamilton drove home the first run of the game with a single to right-center before Vance Sheahan drove in two more with a single back through the middle.
  • B4: The Citadel got back one of its runs as Garrett Dill followed a triple from Anthony Hausner with an RBI single into left-center.
  • B7: Pulling within one, the Bulldogs scratched another tally as a tapper back to the mound with runners on the corners, resulted in a fielder's choice to score the run.
  • T8: Loading the bases with three straight walks to open the inning, Upstate hung four runs on the scoreboard to lengthen its advantage. The runs scored on back-to-back triples to deep center, the first from Grant Sherrod clearing the bases before Sherrod scoring on a triple from Jace Rinehart.

Notable
  • Recording the first four-hit game of his career, Vance Sheahan recorded the Spartans' seventh instance of a player recording four or more hits in a game. He's the fifth different Spartan this season to record such a game, joining Troy Hamilton, Jace Rinehart, Grant Sherrod, and Noah Sullivan.
  • Earning the save Sunday, Jake Cubbler recorded his third save of the season, giving him three or more saves in consecutive seasons following his six-save season in 2023. He's the first Spartan with three-plus saves in consecutive seasons since Kevin Davis from 2020-2022.
