Quick Trip to Athens Sees Upstate Softball Fall to No. 9 Georgia After Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak

ATHENS, GA. – After a seven-game unbeaten streak, USC Upstate softball fell 8-0 in Athens on Wednesday night to No. 9 ranked Georgia.  

Upstate held the top-10 nationally ranked Bulldogs scoreless through three complete innings while stacking three hits. Despite pulling off double plays in both the second and third innings, No. 9 Georgia was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a homerun over center field before adding one final run to establish a four-run lead. The Dogs stacked two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth respectively to finish the game. Sierra Maness made her 20th start of the season and struck out one Bulldog in her 4.0 innings pitched. Maddie Drerup relieved the freshman in the top of the fifth and finished the game after throwing 42 pitches against 10 batters. Alanna Deal. Taliyah Thomas, and Abigail Pippen had one run respectively on Wednesday night. Pippen earned the lone stolen base of the game while Cassie Norris collected one sacrificed bunt to put the Spartans in scoring position.

How It Happened 

  • B4: After three scoreless innings, Georgia was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun over center field that brought in three runs (3-0).  

  • B5: The Dogs extended their lead to five as an Upstate error allowed one run to come in (5-0). 

  • B5: Kearney hit a double to left field that advanced Goodnight home (6-0). 

  • B6: Gordon hit a homerun over right center to extend Georgia's lead (7-0).  

  • B6: Ellison found space down the left field line and safely reached second while Kuma scored the final run of the game (8-0). 

Notable 

  • Upstate's last loss prior to Wednesday night was the second game of the doubleheader against Furman (4-3; Mar. 27). 

  • Abigail Pippen is currently riding a six-game hitting streak, her longest of the season.  

  • Celeste Delorenzo extends her reached base streak to 18, the longest streak of the season for any Spartan, while Delorenzo is currently on a six-game reached base streak
