Spartans Pull off Their First Big South Series Sweep With 5-3 Comeback Win Against the Lancers on Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball earned its first Big South series sweep of the season after finishing the series against Longwood with a 5-3 comeback win on Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.  

After suffering back-to-back losses to the hosting Spartans on Friday, the Lancers were able to establish a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game three. Upstate remained composed and made adjustments through the next three innings which paid off in the bottom of the fourth as Taliyah Thomas scored the first run of the game. Thomas reached home safely reached home from her stolen second base thanks to Abigail Pippen's single to left field. The Spartans came alive in the fifth inning as Denver Lauer's single up the middle was enough to advance Aime Johnson home to bring the game within one run. Lauer came up big for Upstate as she stole home and tied the game 3-3. With two outs and a 1-0 count, Carson Shaw beamed her fifth homerun of the season over the left center wall and brought Celeste Delorenzo home with her to take a two-run lead with two innings left to play. Shaw's homerun and the Spartans disciplined defense were enough to walk away with the 5-3 win. Sierra Maness made her 18th game start of the season in game three of the series and brought her total innings pitched to 112.0 after throwing her 13th complete game of the season. Maness finished the day with two strikeouts against 29 batters faced to earn her 10th win of the season.

How It Happened 

  • T1: Longwood scored the first runs of the game as Anderson knocked a double to right field to advance Taylor and Fox home (2-0). 

  • T1: The Lancers extended their lead to three runs as Knock scored off an Upstate error (3-0).  

  • B4: Taliyah Thomas scored Upstate's first run of the game as she made her way home off Abigail Pippen's single to left field (3-1).  

  • B5: Denver Lauer got the Spartans going in the fifth as she sent a single up the middle and advanced to second off a Longwood error, while Amie Johnson reached home (3-2). 

  • B5: Lauer came home shortly after as her second steal of the game gave the Spartans the tying run (3-3). 

  • B5: With a 1-0 count, Carson Shaw sent one soaring over the left center wall to score two runs and win game three for Upstate (5-3). 

Notable 

  • With her homerun in the fifth inning, Carson Shaw now leads Upstate in homeruns (5) with Lauer and Delorenzo just behind her with four respectively.  

  • This is the first time in the series history that the Spartans swept the series against the Lancers. 

  • Upstate is the first team in the Big South to sweep a conference opponent.

Upstate will spend the week on the road starting with a quick trip to Cullowhee to take on the Catamounts of Western Carolina in a double-header on Tuesday before going to Clinton for a Big South series against Presbyterian.
