FARMVILLE, Va. – Fighting back from a run surrendered early and continuing its battle into the late innings, USC Upstate baseball saw its comeback attempt fall just short—after scratching a pair of runs in the ninth inning, falling 9-7 to Longwood Saturday as the team's final Big South weekend series evened at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The bottom third of the Spartan order set the table for the offense against the Lancers as the trio of freshman third baseman
Vance Sheahan, redshirt sophomore second baseman
Jake Armsey, and redshirt senior centerfielder
Daniel Gernon combined for six of Upstate's nine hits as each recorded a multi-hit game. The top of the order combined to drive in six of the Spartans' seven runs as redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Noah Sullivan drove home one, junior leftfielder
Jace Rinehart two, and redshirt senior first baseman
Grant Sherrod three.
Sherrod's second three-RBI game of the series pushed his season total to 69 as he broke his own single-season Division I era (2007-pres.) record with his first RBI of the night, eclipsing his 66-RBI 2023 campaign.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Henry Proger recorded his fifth quality start of the season as he worked 6.2 innings for the Spartans, striking out five on the day.
Game Information
Score: Longwood 9; USC Upstate 7
Records: USC Upstate (31-20; 15-8 Big South); Longwood (21-27; 8-12 Big South)
Location: Buddy Bolding Stadium | Farmville, Va.
How It Happened
- B1: Taking its first lead of the series, Longwood took advantage of a throwing error as Upstate attempted to catch Noah Campanelli who was tagging from second. As the ball bounded away, he'd raced home to score.
- T5: Battling back to even the game and take the lead, Upstate scored four in the fifth. The first came home as Daniel Gernon employed the slash play and shot one through the infield to tie the game. A double to left-center from Noah Sullivan delivered the lead before an RBI groundout and RBI single through the drawn-in infield from Jace Rinehart and Grant Sherrod, respectively, added some insurance.
- T7: Following a single from Jake Armsey, a double from Gernon, and an intentional walk to Jace Rinehart, the Spartans added another tally as Sherrod drew a bases-loaded walk.
- B7: Fighting its way back and tying the ballgame, Longwood plated four in the seventh inning with the first coming as Tanner Thomas wrapped an opposite-field solo homer around the leftfield foul pole. The following three runs came behind a trio of RBI singles to center.
- B8: For the second straight inning, the Lancers tallied four runs as they broke the 5-5 tie as two scored on a wild pitch. Longwood added two insurance runs behind an RBI single from Blagen Pado.
- T9: Attempting a comeback, Upstate plated two runs in the ninth to cut into the Longwood advantage. A sinking line drive into right-center from Jace Rinehart plated the first ahead of a sac fly from Sherrod that drove home the game's final run.
Notable
- With his fifth-inning RBI Saturday, Grant Sherrod collected his 67th RBI of the season, breaking his Division I era (2007-pres.) single-season RBI record (66 in 2023). His 2024 total (69) ties for the second-most in a season in program history as he chases Leonard Thigpen's record mark of 74 from 1987.
- Recording a ninth-inning single, Jace Rinehart registered his 80th hit of the season, becoming the fifth Spartan in the D1 era to reach 80-plus hits in a season. He's the first to reach the mark since 2013 when Gaither Bumgardner collected 86 hits.
