Vance Sheahan and Tyler Lang Register Multi-Hit Efforts as Baseball Falls Friday at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Entering the day with an opportunity to even its series, USC Upstate baseball dropped game two of the "Battle of the Spartans" against UNC Greensboro Friday, falling in a 9-1 game at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

A pair of freshmen paced Upstate at the plate as catcher Tyler Lang and third baseman Vance Sheahan recorded a pair of hits apiece, their third and 14th multi-hit games of the season, respectively. Lang drove home the Spartans' lone run with an RBI groundout in the first, complementing his multi-hit effort.

Of the Spartans' seven hits on the day, three went for extra-bases as Sheahan, redshirt junior rightfielder Koby Kropf, and junior leftfielder Jace Rinehart each registered doubles. Rinehart's two-bagger marked his 21st of the season, breaking a five-way tie for the most in a single season in program history.

How It Happened
  • T1: Reaching scoring position following a leadoff double and a wild pitch, Koby Kropf came home to score on a groundout off the bat of Tyler Lang.
  • B4: With its first hit of the game, UNCG put itself on the board with a two-run single to right from Zachary Walsh.
  • B5: Extending its advantage with a four-spot in the fifth, UNCG saw its first run cross on a wild pitch before a bases-clearing, three-run double from Luke Holland capped the inning's scoring.
  • B7: Adding an insurance run, UNCG tacked on another tally on an RBI single through the left side by Cam Murphy.
  • B8: A two-run home run from Holland to left added a pair of tallies for UNCG.

Notable
  • With his third-inning double, Jace Rinehart claimed the program record for doubles in a single season, breaking a five-way tie for the top spot. He breaks a tie with Kenny Dickson (1986), Joe Barrett (2000), Luke Weber (2011), and Jason Matthews (2021) for the record.
  • Rinehart's double stands as his 87th hit of the season, giving him sole possession of the second-most hits in a single season in program history. He trails Blake Green's 95 hits in 2011 for the program record.
  • Reaching twice Friday, Vance Sheahan upped his team-long reached base streak to 28 games. The streak is the longest by a Spartan—and longest by a true freshman—since Noah Sullivan crafted a 34-game reached base streak in 2022.
