COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Opening its four-game road swing and facing its final midweek away from home, USC Upstate baseball jumped out early before falling late against Maryland, dropping an 11-8 game Wednesday evening at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Following a first inning where the Spartans went down in order, Upstate jumped on the Terrapins beginning in the second as redshirt junior rightfielder
Koby Kropf and redshirt senior shortstop
Troy Hamilton hit back-to-back homers to open the inning. The Spartans doubled itself up in the third, plating four before adding single tallies in the fourth and fifth behind solo shots from redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Noah Sullivan and freshman catcher
Tyler Lang.
Upstate's eight runs backed a strong effort from sophomore right-hander
Braden Consaul—making his third career start—as he tossed a career-long 4.1 innings while scattering five baserunners and striking out three. He departed the game with two men on in the fifth, leading to his two surrendered runs, as he secured a third start in 2024 going longer than 3.0 innings.
At the plate, Lang finished the night with two hits and three RBI, knocking home two as part of the four-run third before adding another on his solo shot. Hamilton paced the lineup with three hits, each going for extra-bases as he homered and twice doubled.
Maryland, however, battled back with three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and six in the seventh innings.

How It Happened
- T2: After going down in order in the first, Upstate did not do so again in the second, hitting back-to-back home runs to lead off the frame. Koby Kropf slugged the first, his 19th of the season, to left-center before Troy Hamilton crushed a pitch to left, his 15th of the year, to deliver the advantage.
- T3: Adding to its total, the Spartans scored four two-out runs as six consecutive batters reached with two down in the inning. Hamilton kickstarted the scoring as he doubled on a sinking line drive over the head of the centerfielder before Tyler Lang drove home two with an opposite-field single. Scoring Lang, Vance Sheahan split the right-center gap with an RBI single, plating the fourth tally of the stanza.
- T4: Hitting the third Upstate homer of the night, Noah Sullivan exited the yard to right-center as his solo shot tacked a seventh tally on the board with his 17th long ball of the season.
- T5: Expanding upon the Spartans' lead, Tyler Lang launched his third homer of the year with a deep drive to left—Upstate's fourth home run of the night.
- B5: Putting itself on the board for the first time, Maryland scored three behind a pair of home runs, a solo shot from Devin Russell and a two-run homer from Chris Hacopian.
- B6: Trimming the Upstate lead, the Terrapins added two in the sixth behind a two-run homer from Ben Nardi.
- B7: Fighting back to take the lead, Maryland plated six runs in the seventh. The Terrapins benefit from a pair of home runs, a three-run homer from Kevin Keister and a two-run shot from Russell.
Notable
- Hitting his 19th home run of the season in the first inning, Koby Kropf owns sole possession of the second-most homers in a single season in program history, breaking a tie with Lindsay Robinson (18 homers in 1988). With the home run, he's homered in six of the past eight games played by the Spartans.
- With his homer, Kropf pushed his season total bases mark to 142, surpassing teammate Grant Sherrod's total of 140 in 2023 for the most in a single season in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.).
- Making his third start of the season for Upstate, Braden Consaul tossed a career-long 4.1 innings for the Spartans Wednesday. With the outing, he's pitched at least 3.0 innings in each of his appearances as a starting pitcher this season.
