CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Opening the new week, Upstate Men's Soccer traveled to the Queen City taking on Queens University of Charlotte for a midweek non-conference match where the Royals were able to hold off a second half comeback from the Spartans in a 2-1 victory.
The Royals opened the first half with three early shots testing the Upstate defense as Queens looked to find the holes in the defense. At the 12th minute, the Royals successfully added their first goal of the match taking the lead. As the Spartans looked to respond, Queens tacked on their goal at the 27th minute causing Upstate to readjust. As Upstate began to get their offense going, multiple shots were taken from Josh Zawlocki, Oliver Stokkedal and Teun van der Donk. The Royals were able to hold a 2-0 lead going into the break. The second half saw thr Spartans continue to implement their game plan with their offense aggressively taking many shots on frame. At the 71st minute, a cross from Oscar Kelly resulted in Josh Zawlocki finishing the play with a highlight worthy header goal trimming Queens' lead to 2-1. As the match intensified, the Spartans continued to go for the equalizer, but the Royals were able to hold on to secure the win.
