SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Continuing play on Day two of the Upstate Classic, the Spartans welcomed North Carolina A&T and Colgate overcoming intense play through both games to end the day with a sweep along with moving their winning streak to nine games.
The matchup against North Carolina A&T opened with the Spartans adding two runners on base with Denver Lauer being walked and Sophia Kardatzke singling to left field. Carson Shaw's single up the middle showcased the lightning speed from Denver Lauer to score the first run. In the circle, Maddie Drerup struck out the first two batters in the top of the second inning keeping the Aggies cold at bat. The bottom of the inning saw Upstate take advantage of multiple fielding errors with the shortstop mishandling the ball scoring Abby Polk home. The next at bat saw Denver Lauer give the center fielder trouble trying to track the ball helping score two more runs. With two runners on base, the attention to Denver Lauer stealing helped Taliyah Thomas cruise her way home increasing the lead to 5-0. The bottom of the inning ended with Carson Shaw adding a RBI single to left field with Denver Lauer sprinting home for her second run. A passed ball on NC A&T scored the final run of the inning causing the Aggies to have to adjust in the early going. NC A&T picked up the pace adding two runs in the top of the third with a two-run bomb to left center and a RBI single to left field cutting into Upstate's lead. The momentum from the Aggies brought two more runs to trail 7-5 from a fielding error to score two runners home. The Spartans regained composure with Abigail Pippen opening the inning with a double to right center. Alanna Deal's single to left field sounded the alarm for runners to score as Sophia Kardatzke and Abigail Pippen found their way home. Abby Polk wasted no time at the next at bat swinging at the first pitch to score their 10th run of the game. A wild pitch and RBI single later increased the lead for Upstate and Abigail Pippen returned to the plate with a three-RBI double scoring a total of eight runs in the fourth inning. NC A&T would not recover from the hot inning ending the game in a 15-5 run rule finish.
In Game two, Colgate put USC Upstate in situation of fighting early adversity opening the top of the first with a single to right field and a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0. Taliyah Thomas led off with a double to left center getting the hitting party started for USC Upstate. A wild pitch and groundout on Denver Lauer proved to be a decoy with Thomas sprinting home for the first run. With Abigail Pippen getting on base from a double down the left field line, Carson Shaw followed with an infield single scoring their second run and tying the game at two. Upstate took the lead with a hot start to the bottom second with Abby Polk getting on base with a walk and stolen base. A score from a wild pitch and double to left center increased the lead to 4-2. Upstate continued to hit relentlessly with Sophia Kardatzke adding an RBI single down the right field line showing how fast the runners for the Spartans were with Denver Lauer scoring run number five. Colgate wiped the lead away with a two-run homer and a solo shot tying the game. The Spartans reenergized themselves at bat with Denver Lauer responding with a solo shot to left center putting Upstate back in the driver's seat. The Spartans carried their momentum at bat into the bottom of the sixth inning with three hits and two from Abigail Pippen along with Carson Shaw resulting in three runs. With Colgate looking to make one last effort, a runner out at second, a groundout, and flyout to the outfield closed the chapter of a comeback with Upstate winning 9-5.
