SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Entering Saturday looking to even its series with UMass Lowell, USC Upstate baseball left little doubt en route to successfully evening said series, posting season-best scoring and hit totals in the team's 24-12 win Saturday afternoon at Cleveland S. Harley Park. The game marked the fifth time in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) to feature 20-plus runs and 20-plus hits from the Spartans.
For the third straight contest, eight or more Spartan starters finished the game with a hit as eight different starters and 11 players in total recorded a hit Saturday. Seven players ended the day with multi-hit efforts headed by career-high three-hit games from redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Scott Newman, junior first baseman
Wylie Waters, and redshirt freshman rightfielder
Henry Zenor.
Eight starters and 11 different Spartans drove home a run against UMass Lowell in the series' second game. Waters paced the offense with a career-best six RBI, the most in a game by a Spartan in 2025. Two other Spartans picked up three or more RBI for Upstate with sophomore catcher
Tyler Lang and sophomore first baseman
Kai Tullos driving home four and three runners, respectively.

How It Happened
- B2: A day after seeing the team's streak of games with a home run snapped, Upstate used its second trip to the plate to begin a new streak with Tyler Lang launching a two-run shot to left.
- T3: Answering the Spartans' first tallies, UMass Lowell used its largest scoring stanza of the day to take the lead for the first time. The turning point of the frame wrapped its scoring as Sean O'Leary hit a three-run home run to center.
- B3: Getting a pair of tallies back, the Spartans used a pair of productive outs with runners in scoring position to scratch two. A groundout to second from Waters produced the first before a sac fly from Johnny Sweeney pushed across the second run.
- B4: Answering a zero hung on the scoreboard in the River Hawks' half, Upstate exploded for its highest-scoring inning of the year, plating seven in the fourth. RBI singles from Henry Zenor and Scott Newman began the inning's scoring as a bases-loaded walk issued to Waters continued it. Jake Armsey with a single up the middle and Tyler Lang with a double to right drove home two apiece for the final four marks in the inning.
- T5: Getting back one of its surrendered runs, O'Leary added another RBI with a single through the right side.
- B5: Scoring for the fourth straight inning, Upstate tacked on three tallies in the home half of the fifth. Vance Sheahan pushed across the first with a single through the left side before Waters added two more RBI with a single back through the box.
- B6: Putting another large inning on the board, the Spartans scored six in the sixth. Cayden Wotipka began the scoring with a double pulled inside the third base bag, driving in two. A pair of productive outs, a sac fly from Scott Campbell and an RBI groundout from Sheahan, preceded a two-run blast from Waters in capping the frame.
- T7: Clawing into the deficit, the River Hawks plated two in the seventh as Zachary Scott doubled to right-center.
- T8: A second homer from O'Leary capped a huge day at the plate for the UMass Lowell first baseman with his three-run shot leading to five unanswered River Hawk runs.
- B8: Closing the day's scoring, the Spartans provided their answer in the home half of the eight, adding four more runs to the scoreboard. Owen Ross got the inning's scoring started with a single into center before Kai Tullos ended it with a bases-clearing, three-run double off the wall in left.
Notable
- Saturday's game marked the fifth instance of a 20-run and 20-hit game in the Spartans' Division I era (2007-pres.), the team's first since the 2023 campaign. The 24-run, 21-hit effort against UMass Lowell Saturday joins the following contests in the milestone: Feb. 15, 2013, versus Niagara (23 runs; 20 hits), May 7, 2016, versus Florida Gulf Coast (21 runs; 25 hits), Feb. 25, 2022, versus Manhattan (21 runs, 20 hits), and March 14, 2023, versus The Citadel (25 runs, 23 hits).
- Upstate's 24 runs scored against UMass Lowell in game two of the three-game series rank as the second-highest single-game scoring total in program history. The total trails the 25 runs scored against Newberry on March 1, 2006, and against The Citadel on March 14, 2023, for the record.
