Upstate Men’s Basketball finish with three players in double figures, unable to complete second half comeback

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Taking the court for the final regular-season game in the G.B. Hodge Center, the Spartans battled Longwood for an afternoon Saturday conference clash with three Spartan players scoring in double figures.  

The Spartans were led by Mister Dean adding 17 points along with a team-leading eight rebounds while shooting 6-for-10 from the field, 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-8 from the charity stripe. Defensively, Dean added two steals and one block. Brit Harris followed with 15 points off the bench, a season high of two blocks and shot 50 percent from the field. Daniel Helterhoff added his second consecutive double figure game with 11 points shooting 3-for-4 overall, 1-for-2 from the three point line, and 80 percent from the charity stripe.  

Longwood outdueled the Spartans in the paint with 46 points to Upstate's 34. Upstate took the edge on Points off turnovers with 20 to 18. The play from the second unit on both sides displayed with the Lancers adding 36 bench points and the Spartans tacking on 24. Longwood's will to crash the boards helped win the battle with 40 rebounds (15 offensive and 25 defensive) to Upstate's 24 (seven offensive and 17 defensive).

How it Happened 

First Half 

  • The Lancers jumped to an early 6-0 lead with three consecutive layups causing Upstate to take a timeout and adjust. Upstate jumped in the scoring column with a Mister Dean dunk and Karmani Gregory three-pointer.  

  • As Longwood continued to push the pace offensively, the Spartans used an 11-4 run to wipe the lead away from Longwood following a block from Brit Harris and three-pointer from Mister Dean

  • With the score now tied under the 10 minute mark, Longwood used an 18-6 run to jump back into the driver seat leading 40-26.  

  • Upstate looked to end the first half on a positive note with two consecutive dunks from Mister Dean, a deep three-pointer from Brit Harris, and a buzzer-beater mid range from Karmani Gregory

Second Half 

  • The Lancers opened the second half with a 18-5 run to add their biggest lead of 25.  

  • Helterhoff continued to bring a sign of life for the Spartans with a pump fake at the three-point line to finish with an and-one layup.  

  • Upstate continued showing fight through the last five minutes with Brit Harris converting two consecutive three-pointers and a layup from Nic Book to end the game. 

Notable 

  • Daniel Helterhoff scored in double figures for the second consecutive time on the year finishing with four double digit performances in the regular season. 

  • Mister Dean scored 17 Points adding his 24th double digit game on the season to continue his case as a top freshman player in the NCAA.

With the regular season wrapping up, Upstate turns their attention to Johnson City where the Spartans will compete in the Big South Conference Championships with the official seedings being announced through the weekend.
