GREENVILLE, S.C. – Facing its crosstown rival for the first time since 2022 and doing so outside of the Hub City for the first time in the series, USC Upstate baseball captured the first of three midweek meetings with Wofford behind stingy pitching and timely hitting, taking an 8-5 victory Wednesday evening at Fluor Field at the West End.
Making his first career start, junior left-handed pitcher
Alex Sanderson stymied the Terrier bats, permitting one hit over 5.0 frames and surrendering two unearned runs while striking out a career-best three. Of his 5.0 innings of work, four stanzas saw Sanderson retire Wofford in order in his career-long outing. Redshirt sophomore righty
Max Bianchini and sophomore right-hander
Cooper Ellingworth tossed 1.2 innings of relief each with Bianchini holding the Terriers off the scoreboard before giving way to Ellingworth to close the door on his first save of 2025.
Backing Sanderson, the offense produced the team's sixth half-inning of the year scoring 6 or more runs, pushing six across in the third following a three-up, three-down frame from the Spartan southpaw. The Upstate outfield fuelled the six-run frame with redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Scott Newman and redshirt freshman leftfielder
Henry Zenor driving in the first two runs. Following a walk to load the bases, redshirt junior rightfielder
Scott Campbell launched his second home run of the year, a missile over the Green Monster in left.
Adding insurance, Upstate tacked on two runs in the eighth as junior catcher
Preston Lucas slugged his first long ball in a Spartan uniform, a solo shot deposited in the bullpens in right-center, and Zenor went against the shift for his second RBI of the night.

How It Happened
- T2: Taking advantage of a trio of Spartan errors and employing small ball, Wofford scratched a pair of runs in the second. The first crossed on a squeeze play before an Upstate fielding error allowed the second.
- B3: Answering a zero hung by Alex Sanderson in the prior half-inning, Upstate exploded for six runs in the home half. Scott Newman via fielder's choice and Henry Zenor via single plated the first two before the biggest hit of the night came from Scott Campbell, clearing the bases as he crushed a grand slam over the Green Monster.
- T6: Converting themselves with the bases loaded, the Terriers scored twice with a Tanner Hardin two-run single to right.
- B8: Adding a run of insurance, Preston Lucas led off the eighth with a solo homer into the bullpens in right-center, his first long ball as a Spartan. Zenor later chipped in a second RBI, going against the shift to drive home Gage Griggs.
- T9: Sneaking a ball inside the third base bag, Ryan Wynn drove in the game's final fun with an RBI double.
Notable
- Launching a missile over the Green Monster in left, Scott Campbell hit the Spartans' second grand slam of the season—the first leaving the confines of the ballpark—following Alex Ritzer's inside-the-park grand slam versus Stetson on March 11. Campbell's grand slam is the 24th in the Spartan's Division I era (2007-pres.) as he becomes the 17th different Spartan to hit one in their career.
- Earning the victory Wednesday evening, Upstate's triumph over Wofford marks the first win for the program at Fluor Field at the West end since Feb. 28, 2023, when the Spartans downed Clemson 6-3.
