MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Facing the team's final foray into midweek competition, USC Upstate baseball offered a late-inning comeback attempt, scoring the final two runs of the night while holding College of Charleston off the board from the fifth inning onward. The Spartans, however, dropped their final midweek contest 7-5 to the Cougars Tuesday evening at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
Putting itself in a position to erase an early College of Charleston lead, Upstate manufactured six runners into scoring position via stolen base, swiping a season-high six steals. Redshirt junior rightfielder
Scott Campbell grabbed a team-high two stolen bases with junior second baseman
Gage Griggs, junior catcher
Preston Lucas, redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Scott Newman, and junior shortstop
Vance Sheahan taking bags.
Sheahan's stolen base marked his 25
th of the season, tying
Easton Cullison (2023) for the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) record for single-season stolen bases. Adding to his steal, Sheahan recorded a pair of RBI, pacing the Spartans in the category against the Cougars. Redshirt freshman leftfielder
Henry Zenor led Upstate at the plate with three hits, tying his career high.

How It Happened
- T1: Using a pair of singles from two of the first three men to step to the plate, Upstate scratched the first run as Scott Campbell bounded a ball back through the middle, allowing Henry Zenor to race home from second.
- B1: Chasing a pair of doubles with RBI singles, College of Charleston got its run back and then some, scoring three times in the frame. Ethan Plyler and Alex LaCoste (two) recorded RBI in the frame for the Cougars.
- T2: Behind a pair of hits in the inning, the Spartans trimmed the deficit to a single run on an RBI single to left from Vance Sheahan, driving home Wylie Waters who doubled earlier in the inning.
- B3: Extending their advantage, the Cougars plated a pair in the third behind a sac fly from Tyler Sorrentino and a double from Ben Venables.
- T4: Getting a run back, Upstate used a similar formula to collect its third tally of the night as Sheahan drove home a run following a Waters' double.
- B4: Adding a pair of runs to the board in the fourth, Plyler and LaCoste each picked up another RBI behind a solo home run and an RBI single, respectively.
- T7: Scoring from second, Campbell raced home to score on a fly ball to center off the bat of Scott Newman, closing the deficit for the Spartans.
- T8: Splitting the gap in right-center, Zenor added another run to the board for Upstate, driving home Jake Armsey from third.
Notable
- With his fourth-inning stolen base, Vance Sheahan swiped his 25th bag of the season, tying the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) single-season stolen base record, joining Easton Cullison (2023) atop the leaderboard. Sheahan and Cullison are tied for third all-time in program history in the category.
- Stealing six bases Tuesday, Upstate recorded its highest single-game stolen base total of the 2025 season, the most since swiping six bags versus Radford on March 22, 2024.
